Depression drains our motivation, takes away our joy, disrupts our sleep, and makes our tasks feel bigger than they ever have. For many people, the hardest part of dealing with depression is not being able to articulate their sadness; it is living through the emotional fatigue, loneliness, or hopelessness they feel without it getting any better. Banyan Heartland offers inpatient depression treatment in Illinois for adults who require more support than the traditional outpatient treatment can offer. In a residential setting to stabilize the patient, we offer inpatient depression treatment in Illinois and Virtual IOP via Telehealth for ongoing care. We help people step out of survival mode and get back on their feet.

Depression Treatment at Our Illinois Facility

Banyan Heartland offers a supportive depression mental health treatment setting for adults whose lives have been altered by depression, and it has disrupted their daily living, their relationships, and their ability to enjoy their lives.

We offer individualized treatment to our clients based on their symptoms, medical and mental health history, their current stressors, and treatment goals. It is not a standard approach in a one-size-fits-all model.

In our Illinois mental health facility, you have the opportunity to step away from your external life and focus on treatment. We offer the clinical treatment, structure, and support you need to help build stability in your life.

Understanding Depression and Its Different Forms

Depression is not a bad week or just feeling low. There are many types of depression, and there are also different manifestations of depression that require proper mental health diagnosis. It is a disorder that affects our energy, our ability to focus, our ability to eat and sleep, our ability to see value in ourselves, and our ability to engage in daily life. It can manifest itself emotionally and physically.

There are different types of depression, such as:

  • major depressive disorder
  • persistent depressive disorder
  • seasonal affective disorder
  • trauma
  • grief

A clinician needs to be careful about diagnosing a major depressive episode, as some of the symptoms mirror those of bipolar disorder.

Some people feel slowed down, numb, and distant, while others feel very active, irritable, and overwhelmed, and while some may feel depressed for most of the day every day, others may not have an experience of depression as frequently but experience more symptoms of depression at once.

While depression can vary a lot depending on which kind you are dealing with and the people with whom you may share it, it still needs to be taken seriously.

When Inpatient Depression Treatment Is Recommended

An inpatient mental health facility is appropriate in cases where the patient’s depression may be unmanageable and needs close oversight, or for the client who has not responded to other levels of care.

  • When depression prevents you from being able to work, attend school, or manage your daily responsibilities.
  • Depression symptoms have become persistent, severe, and disruptive.
  • You have no desire to feel or do anything, have isolated yourself completely, and do not feel as though you are your typical self.
  • You have attended some counseling sessions or taken medications in an outpatient setting, but found that your treatment did not go far enough.
  • Depression has occurred alongside your other anxiety, trauma, or mood disorder symptoms.
  • You need a more immersive therapeutic approach to help stabilize your condition.

An assessment can help determine whether inpatient residential mental health treatment is the right place to begin and what level of treatment will be appropriate.

Depression Treatment Options in Illinois

At Banyan Heartland, we offer two types of treatment in Illinois mental health treatment: Inpatient Mental Health treatment and Virtual IOP via Telehealth. Inpatient treatment allows you to stay in our facility and receive daily therapeutic support and care as part of an established routine, including close clinical oversight. Inpatient depression treatment in Illinois offers adults who experience severe depressive symptoms an opportunity to rebuild their capacity to live a normal life.

Virtual IOP via Telehealth allows the patient to move forward with more outpatient therapy once they are ready to return to their everyday lives. They have the opportunity to continue working on strategies for coping and maintaining resilience and building insight into their symptoms and how to prevent a depressive relapse while returning to their normal schedule to work and attend family or other activities.

What to Expect During Inpatient Depression Treatment Assessment and Goal Setting

First, we do a thorough assessment that includes a history of depressive symptoms, mental health history, current stresses, the need for medication, and your level of functioning. This way, we are not guessing about what you are going through.

Daily Structure and Therapy

Clients participate in individual therapy, group therapy, psychoeducation, and skills training that help with managing emotions, interpersonal communication, and establishing more positive habits. With depression, simply having structure is helpful because it restores the habit of consistency.

Building a Transition Plan After Discharge

As clients begin to stabilize and symptoms subside, we focus on the future. Clients develop coping skills and discharge planning so that there is no uncertainty after the program ends.

How Depression Is Treated in Residential Care

Banyan Heartland uses a clinical team approach grounded in evidence-based care. Clients in our depression program may participate in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps people identify thought patterns or behaviors that are fueling the hopelessness or withdrawal. They may also learn from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which targets the management of intense emotions or distress intolerance that often accompany depression. Group therapy allows for the practice of communication skills and reassurance that one is not alone in their burden.

Depending on individual needs, clients may also receive medication management, psychoeducation, wellness planning, and family involvement as appropriate. We do not give simple advice such as just try to think positively. We work with clients to help them understand their symptoms, learn to manage them in more adaptive ways, and create a more stable foundation for their future.

What Happens After Depression Treatment

Leaving residential treatment is not the end of the road. Before discharge, clients work with the team to prepare for continued care, which may include Virtual IOP via Telehealth, outpatient therapy, medication follow-up, and establishing more positive habits at home. Continued care is important because people often recover gradually over time from depression with consistent care and support in their lives, not just in a residential program.

Choosing an Inpatient Depression Treatment Program in Illinois

When looking for a program, it helps to seek ones that offer an individualized planning process, licensed clinical staff, adequate scheduling with therapy, and a clear step-down plan following residential care. The best programs give people a full understanding of both the impact and the everyday functioning related to depression, and are not simply encouraging people to think more positively.

At Banyan Heartland, we are committed to working with patients from across the state of Illinois. We help those who may benefit from a more concentrated and therapeutic approach to depression treatment in Illinois. We want to provide the kind of care that feels supportive and non-judgmental to people who have been struggling for an extended period of time.

Admissions & Getting Started

We accept patients from anywhere in Illinois. Our Admissions team can verify insurance eligibility and walk you through the process of intake. It is always okay to have questions about the program and whether or not it is a good fit for you. If depression is making it more difficult to carry on in your day-to-day life, you are not alone. Recovery may begin with the very first conversation when there is the right structure and program in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

1How do I know if I need inpatient treatment for depression?
Inpatient treatment can be helpful when symptoms are severe and not improving with weekly individual sessions or other forms of lower-level care.
2Can treatment still be beneficial if I have been in therapy before?
It certainly can. People often experience benefits from a more structured program, new treatment modalities, or a more comprehensive plan that includes therapy along with medication support.
3Can I receive Virtual IOP via Telehealth after residential treatment?
Absolutely. If you complete residential treatment, you may be able to continue Virtual IOP via Telehealth services for continued support.
4Does depression treatment only address sadness?
No. We also focus on the loss of energy, isolation, sleep changes, difficulty concentrating, irritability, or how depression interferes with daily life.
