The 12-Step program is perhaps one of the most well-recognized models of recovery for substance use disorders. The twelve steps were made famous through the organization Alcoholics Anonymous and were created to assist people with alcohol use disorders in working through the process of recovery towards achieving a state of long-term sobriety. Originally published in the book Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism in 1939, the 12-Step Program has remained a popular method of recovery for many people seeking to overcome their addiction problems.[1]
At its core, the 12-Step program minimizes personal responsibility through reflection and spiritual growth.[2] Participants are encouraged to view addiction as a chronic disease[3] and recognize the ways in which substance use has affected them, as well as work towards meaningful life changes. As the success of AA continued, the 12-Step model was sought out for drug addiction through Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and other forms of substance use and addictive behaviors.
Banyan Treatment Center offers the 12-Step program as one part of a multifaceted recovery process. We incorporate AA and NA principles into structured programming to support personal recovery while also addressing mental health needs, co-occurring disorders, and long-term stability.
Understanding the 12-Step Program
The 12 Step program is based on a set of guiding principles that are meant to guide an individual through recovery. For instance, any person with a desire to quit substance use is allowed to join.[12] The meetings provide support from other members, who have also gone through similar experiences.
The 12 Step program does not supply any sort of medical treatment. In fact, it acts more as a support group. The process helps them get through the 12 steps at their own pace. In most cases, the 12-step program is sponsored by someone who has achieved long-term sobriety. There is an emphasis on continued honesty and learning throughout the process.
Among the notable aspects of this program is the spiritual undertone. In this case, the addictive feels free to put their trust and faith in a power greater than themselves in a manner that suits their own beliefs. This helps the addict develop greater direction and motivation in this case.
Alcoholics Anonymous & Narcotics Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous is specifically concerned with alcohol use disorders, while Narcotics Anonymous is concerned with drug addiction and substance use disorders. However, while the subject matter is different, the same twelve steps and twelve traditions are followed by both programs. The traditions include how each substance use disorder support group is conducted, such as unity, service, and personal anonymity.
Members of AA and NA attend group meetings where they share their experiences of recovery and support one another. Sponsorship is an important part of the program, enabling people new to recovery to learn from those who have already completed the steps.
Although AA and NA are peer support groups and not considered formal treatment programs, studies have shown that attendance can be beneficial in maintaining abstinence and improving recovery outcomes when combined with professional addiction treatment.[4]

How the 12-Step Program Works at Banyan
The 12-Step program at Banyan Treatment Center is incorporated in a recovery setting where the support of peers is combined in conjunction with licensed professionals. This approach enables participants to complete the emotionally difficult steps of the program while also addressing any mental health conditions that may influence recovery.
AA members and NA members go to regular meetings where they share their recovery experiences and challenges, and support each other. The concept of sponsorship is also very useful, where a new alcoholic in recovery is able to learn from someone who has gone through the process.
Even though AA and NA are peer-based groups and not viewed as formal treatment groups, research and clinical experience have demonstrated that membership in these groups can help to maintain abstinence and improve sustained recovery outcomes.[5]
Benefits of the 12-Step Program
When first entering the world of recovery from addictions, the task can be daunting. This is particularly true in the initial stages of recovery. The 12-Step program provides an organized guide and helps an individual succeed through his or her journey, enabling them to forge meaningful relationships with other recovering addicts.[10]
Instead of emphasizing abstinence, the program promotes personal growth.[11] In fact, the individual has gained many benefits: improved self-knowledge, enhanced capacity for coping with life, and a defined purpose. Additionally, the group setting of the meeting reduces loneliness that is commonly experienced.
Other advantages of the 12-Step Program include:
- Support and connection with a community of sober individuals.
- Accountability increased through sponsorship and group involvement
- Increased awareness and response to unhealthy behaviors
- Building skills for relapse prevention
- Chances for helping others and solidifying one’s own recovery
Many people stay with the program long after completing treatment. This helps to give structure and consistency to recovery.

Faith-Based Recovery and Christianity
The association between Alcoholics Anonymous and spirituality is well established.[6] Principles of the program are quite close to Christian values, especially those concerning humility, surrender, forgiveness, and personal growth.
AA is commonly linked to the Serenity Prayer:
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.”
While the prayer has been written by renowned theologian Reinhold Niebuhr and has not been derived from the Bible, it can see an echo of Christian values in these lines.[7] Among individuals with faith-based recovery programs, prayer and meditation help to improve conscious contact with the higher power and maintain long-term sobriety.
At Banyan, the choice of religious-based participation is optional, and we embrace every belief system, offering religious and non-secular recovery solutions.
Types of 12-Step Programs
Although the twelve steps were primarily designed to aid individuals in their strive for sobriety from alcohol use through the support of Alcoholics Anonymous, the concept has since been applied to other forms of substance use disorders and compulsive behaviors.
Some examples of groups and organizations that operate under the 12-Step method include:
- Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
- Cocaine Anonymous (CA)
- Overeaters Anonymous (OA)
- Gamblers Anonymous (GA)
- Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA)
- Emotions Anonymous (EA)
- Debtors Anonymous (DA)
- Nicotine Anonymous
- Workaholics Anonymous (WA)
- Marijuana Anonymous (MA)
- Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA)
While Banyan's 12-Step program is itself designed off of the AA and NA principles pertaining to alcohol and drug addiction, respectively, the core spiritual principle and mode of peer-led recovery remain consistent throughout these associated groups. Each serves to provide individuals with the opportunity to regain that sense of control over their life which has been lost to substance or behavior addiction.
