Welcome to Banyan Tampa

Mental health disorders affect millions of adults in the country, and the availability of professionals is a challenge in Florida. In Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, , many people are suffering from depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and other psychiatric problems without regular access to care. The absence of qualified professionals, affordability, and delayed treatment allows the symptoms to worsen before treatment can be sought.

Banyan Tampa was established to tackle this problem. Our treatment facility provides residential inpatient psychiatric care and Telehealth Intensive Outpatient services for those patients whose symptoms require structured treatment. We do not operate as a substance detox facility at present. We treat patients with primary mental health problems using individualized, medically supported treatment programs.

Statewide Substance Abuse Overview

In Florida, unintentional and undetermined drug overdose deaths rose significantly during the pandemic. According to the Florida Department of Health (via its FL-DOSE program), deaths climbed from 5,019 in 2019 to 7,137 in 2020, a 42% increase.

The 2022 annual examiners’ report shows drug-related deaths remain high, highlighting that while some improvements may be underway, the crisis is still very real.

What this means for someone exploring treatment: the environment around you matters. Whether you’re looking for yourself or a loved one, knowing that Florida continues to battle high overdose levels underscores how important it is to choose a program with strong, local connections and comprehensive care.

Pinellas County and Areas Within

In a report by the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg, it was found that in Pinellas County, about 12.7% of adults reported experiencing poor mental health on 14 or more of the previous 30 days in 2019 (an increase from 12.0% in 2016). Additionally, the statewide data indicate that in Florida, 15.0% of adults reported “poor mental health on 14 or more of the past 30 days” in the 2022 survey.

These figures underscore the ongoing and significant need for mental health services in the county.

Why It Matters Locally (Including Hillsborough County/Tampa-Bay Area)

The statewide numbers paint one picture; the local scene adds another layer.

Access to mental health providers in Pinellas County is limited. A 2018 report noted a ratio of approximately 570 to 1 (population to mental health providers) in Pinellas County. Areas like Pinellas face federally-designated shortages of mental-health providers. The Florida Behavioral Health Association found that a large portion of adults with mental illness do not receive treatment.

Regarding substance use, FLHealthCHARTS shows drug poisoning deaths, by county and year, so you can see where the pressure points are.

  • Overdose death rates remain elevated in the Tampa Bay region.
  • style="font-weight: 400;">Opioids (especially illicit ones like style="font-weight: 400;">fentanyl) continue to show up heavily in toxicology reports.
  • Your choice of a behavioral health program should account for the local environment: higher risk, greater need, and greater urgency for thorough care.

Frequently Asked Questions

1Does this facility offer any outpatient care?

Yes. While our main focus at Banyan Tampa is inpatient treatment, we also understand that recovery is a process; not everyone needs or can commit to a whole residential stay. That’s why we offer nearby outpatient programs at our Banyan Pompano and Banyan Gulf Breeze facilities.

These programs are designed for individuals who are ready to transition back to daily life but still want continued outpatient support. These flexible levels of care help you maintain accountability, attend therapy, and receive ongoing clinical guidance while you return home and rebuild your routines.

Our team focuses on your long-term recovery process and overall wellness, helping you balance treatment with work, school, or family responsibilities.

2When should someone choose inpatient treatment for mental health?

Inpatient treatment is best suited for individuals whose symptoms have become too difficult to manage safely on their own. If daily functioning, relationships, or emotional stability are being affected, it’s time to consider a structured setting.

At our practice, every patient receives an individualized treatment plan tailored to their specific needs and circumstances. Our multidisciplinary team (made up of psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, and support staff) works together to create a treatment process focused on safety, stabilization, and lasting emotional well-being.

Choosing inpatient care isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a proactive decision to take control of your symptoms and get the support you deserve in a safe, therapeutic environment.

3Does insurance cover inpatient mental health care?

Yes, in most cases, insurance can help offset or fully cover the cost of residential behavioral health care.

We believe finances shouldn’t stand in the way of healing, so our admissions team will help you verify your insurance benefits before treatment begins.

Our care team works directly with major insurance providers to ensure you receive the maximum coverage available for your specific plan. Even if your policy has limitations, we’ll walk you through all available resources and payment options so you can access the level of care you need without added stress.

4Does Banyan Tampa offer substance use detox or addiction treatment?
No. Banyan Tampa currently specializes in residential mental health treatment and Telehealth Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services. If you are seeking substance use treatment or medical detox, one of our multiple Banyan Treatment Centers located throughout Florida can assist in connecting you with the appropriate level of care.

A substance use treatment program will be coming to Banyan Tampa in the near future. Until then, our admissions team is happy to help coordinate care and provide referrals within the Banyan network to ensure individuals receive the support they need.
5Who is a good candidate for residential mental health treatment?
Residential mental health treatment may be appropriate for individuals experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms, difficulty functioning in daily life, or those who have not improved with outpatient care alone. It is especially beneficial for individuals who need a structured, supportive environment with 24/7 clinical oversight.
6What is the difference between residential mental health treatment and Telehealth IOP?
Residential mental health treatment is a live-in level of care with round-the-clock support and daily therapeutic programming. Telehealth IOP is a structured outpatient program delivered virtually, allowing individuals to receive therapy several days per week while continuing to live at home and manage daily responsibilities.
7How is medication management conducted during inpatient treatment?
During inpatient treatment, medication management is monitored by licensed psychiatrists and medical staff. The patient will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to assess symptoms, medical history, and any medications currently being taken.

If medication is prescribed or changed, it is carefully monitored in a structured environment to assess its effectiveness, manage side effects, and promote stabilization. Regular follow-ups enable the treatment team to make necessary adjustments while integrating medication with therapy and other treatment services.
8What are the symptoms that require inpatient psychiatric care?

Inpatient psychiatric care can be required when mental health symptoms become severe, persistent, or difficult to manage. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Persistent or worsening depression
  • Intense anxiety or panic attacks
  • Severe mood swings or mood instability
  • Suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors
  • Hallucinations or disorganized thinking
  • Extreme emotional distress
  • Inability to sleep or eat regularly
  • Difficulty performing basic daily activities
  • Sudden behavioral changes or withdrawal from others

Inpatient care is usually recommended if symptoms become severe rapidly, if symptoms no longer respond to outpatient treatment, or if there is a need for close monitoring to ensure safety and stabilization.

9What occurs during a mental health assessment?
The mental health assessment is a personal interview with a licensed mental health professional regarding current symptoms, changes in mood, levels of stress, sleep, and how these factors are affecting daily life. The mental health professional will also ask questions about medical history, past treatment, and current medications.

Mental health tests and screening tools can aid in understanding the degree of symptoms and diagnosing depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and trauma-related problems. A psychiatrist can conduct a psychiatric evaluation to determine the need for medication and safety needs.

The purpose of the evaluation is to determine the level of care and develop a treatment plan before admission.
10What happens after discharge from inpatient mental health treatment?
After discharge, the emphasis is on maintaining stability and progress outside the inpatient environment. Before the patient is discharged from treatment, a discharge plan tailored to the patient’s needs is developed by the treatment team.

The discharge plan may involve continued therapy with the outpatient program or Telehealth Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), follow-up appointments with mental health professionals, management of medication if prescribed, and referral to support resources. The patient is also educated on coping skills, daily living, and early warning signs.

Continued support after discharge assists patients in readjusting to life, prevents the return of symptoms, and promotes mental wellness.
