What We Treat

Banyan Alaska provides treatment for substance use disorders and mental health conditions, including:

Day Treatment (Partial Hospitalization)

Day Treatment at Banyan Alaska, also called our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), gives people strong support during early recovery. It offers the same level of care as inpatient treatment, but clients can go home or to a supportive place each night.

Through our PHP, clients participate in a comprehensive schedule of therapy, including one-on-one counseling, group sessions, relapse prevention, and wellness activities.

Our experienced team helps clients work through the physical, emotional, and behavioral sides of addiction, as well as individuals who require consistent therapeutic engagement without 24-hour supervision.

Intensive Outpatient

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Banyan Alaska gives people the support they need while they handle daily life. Clients get structured care a few days a week, so they can keep working, going to school, or caring for family while staying in treatment.

Our IOP includes a combination of evidence-based therapies, including individual counseling, group therapy, relapse prevention, and educational sessions focused on emotional regulation, communication, and coping strategies. Clients benefit from the guidance of our licensed clinicians, who help them address the root causes of addiction and strengthen their relapse prevention skills.

At Banyan Alaska, we emphasize personalized treatment planning to meet each client’s unique needs and goals, ensuring that recovery remains both manageable and meaningful.

Telehealth Virtual IOP

Prefer something remote? Banyan Alaska offers a virtual drug & alcohol program through Telehealth services; a convenient and flexible option for individuals seeking addiction treatment from the comfort of their own homes.

Through our virtual platform, clients can access a range of therapeutic services, including individual counseling, group therapy, and educational workshops. Our trained professionals use secure, user-friendly technology to ensure you receive the same level of care and support as you would in an in-person setting.

Telehealth is a great choice if you have trouble with transportation, want privacy, or need to keep up with daily life while in treatment. At Banyan Alaska, we work to make recovery easy to access and effective for all.

Statewide Overview

Alaska has major challenges with alcohol and drug abuse, partly because of its size and remote areas. Limited law enforcement makes it easier for drug cartels and gangs to operate in both rural and urban communities.

  • Remote areas: Many parts of Alaska are far from main roads and towns. This isolation lets drug dealers raise prices because getting drugs to these places is harder.
  • Limited law enforcement: Alaska's size makes it hard for police to cover every area. This gives more room for illegal activities to happen.

Wasilla and Surrounding Areas

Wasilla, in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough, is one of the areas in Alaska most affected by opioid problems.

From 2019 to 2024, Mat-Su recorded the highest rate of nonfatal opioid overdose emergency-department visits in Alaska: 3.6 per 1,000 ED visits, compared to 2.6 statewide. In 2023, Alaska recorded 357 drug overdose deaths, with 265 involving opioids, most linked to illicitly manufactured fentanyl.

Treatment and Recovery

Even though Alaska is large, there are only about 80 treatment centers, according to SAMHSA. This small number can make it hard for people to get the help they need.

The drugs most frequently abused include alcohol, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, prescription drugs, and marijuana. Often, individuals may use a combination of these substances simultaneously, complicating treatment strategies.

Many of these facilities do accept private and public insurance and offer reduced fees based on income, providing some level of accessibility to treatment options. Furthermore, twelve-step meetings are widely available throughout the state, supporting those in recovery.

Why Banyan Alaska?

Banyan Alaska FAQs

1Is outpatient rehab for substance abuse covered by insurance?
Yes. Banyan Alaska is in-network with many major insurance providers, and most plans include behavioral-health benefits that may cover part or all of your stay. Coverage varies by provider, so our admissions specialists verify your insurance benefits before treatment begins to give you a clear understanding of any out-of-pocket costs.
2How much does outpatient treatment for addiction cost without insurance in Alaska?

In Alaska, the cost of addiction treatment varies considerably depending on the type of program, its duration, the level of care, amenities, and location. Residential (in-patient) programs tend to cost more than outpatient programs. One recent analysis cited an average of around $52,000 for a 13-week residential stay in Alaska. Outpatient programs are comparatively less expensive, with one estimate around $2,400 for a 30-day program in Alaska.

That said, many factors influence the final cost and should be seen as rough benchmarks, not guarantees. Payment options can help make treatment more accessible:

  • Many facilities accept private health insurance, Medicaid/Medicare, and veteran/military insurance.
  • Sliding-scale fees (costs that adjust based on income) and self-payment options are also widely available, especially for lower-income or rural clients.
  • Some state-funded or tribal programs offer low-cost or even no-cost treatment for eligible individuals.

If you're unsure, speak to our admissions team today to discuss possible payment options or verify your insurance free of charge.

3What should I expect in an addiction outpatient program?

A typical day in our outpatient program may include:

  • Morning or afternoon therapy sessions: Depending on your schedule, you’ll attend individual counseling, group therapy, or educational sessions several days per week. These sessions focus on relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and identifying triggers.
  • Peer and group discussions: Group therapy helps you connect with others in recovery, share experiences, and build mutual accountability. Many clients find this sense of community essential for long-term healing.
  • Skill-building and education: You’ll participate in workshops that teach coping mechanisms, stress management, and healthy lifestyle habits to support sobriety.
  • Flexible scheduling: Sessions are typically held 3–5 days a week, allowing you to continue working, attending school, or caring for family.
4If I or someone I know has a severe addiction problem, is outpatient the way to go?
Outpatient treatment may not always be appropriate for severe substance use disorders. Individuals who require medical detox, 24-hour supervision, or intensive stabilization often begin in a higher level of care, such as residential rehab or intensive inpatient programs.

However, outpatient care, such as IOP or Telehealth, can be an effective step-down level once initial stabilization is achieved.

If you’re unsure which level of care is right for you or a loved one, our clinical team can conduct a confidential assessment.
5Are there any local resources to support addicts in Alaska?

Yes. Alaska offers several key support resources:

Treatment and support: The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) provides treatment and prevention services for substance use disorders.

Insurance/payment help: Many Alaska programs accept Medicaid (e.g., the state’s Medicaid plan covers addiction treatment services).

Referral service: The statewide helpline Alaska 2‑1‑1 (call 2-1-1 or 1-800-478-2221) connects individuals to local treatment, health, housing, and other services.

Crisis support: The Careline Alaska crisis line offers 24/7 free confidential help (phone: 1-877-266-4357; text “4help” to 839863), including for addiction-related crises.

6What is your admissions process like?
Step 1: Call into Our Admissions Department

Clients or family members can call into our admissions department and speak to one of our treatment specialists. Our team is available 24/7, ensuring that help is always within reach. During this initial call, our specialists will provide compassionate support and gather preliminary information about the client's situation. This includes understanding the nature of the substance use issue, any co-occurring mental health conditions, and other relevant details. This step is crucial as it sets the foundation for the subsequent stages of the admission process.

Step 2: Initial Assessment

After the initial call, we schedule a comprehensive assessment to determine the medical and clinical needs of the client. This assessment is reviewed by our experienced medical and clinical staff and includes a thorough evaluation of the client's physical health, mental health, and substance use history. The assessment may involve standardized questionnaires, interviews, and, if necessary, medical examinations. The goal is to create a detailed profile of the client's condition, which will guide the development of a personalized treatment plan. This step ensures that we can identify the most suitable program for the client, whether it be residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, or another level of care.

Step 3: Verification of Insurance

Understanding the financial aspects of treatment is a crucial part of the admissions process. Our admissions team will work with the client's insurance provider to verify benefits and coverage. We strive to ensure that clients and their families have a clear understanding of their insurance benefits, the estimated costs of care, and any out-of-pocket expenses they might incur. This transparency helps in alleviating any financial concerns, allowing clients to focus solely on their recovery journey. Our team is also available to answer any questions regarding payment plans or financial assistance options if needed.

Step 4: Admission into Program

Once all preparations are complete, individuals are officially admitted into the treatment program. This marks the beginning of their therapeutic journey. Upon arrival, clients are welcomed by our staff. During the initial phase of treatment, clients will undergo a detailed orientation to the program's rules, schedules, and expectations. This step ensures that clients feel comfortable and supported as they transition into the therapeutic environment, setting the stage for a successful recovery process.
