The members of the LGBTQ+ community have their own struggles and problems that others may not be able to comprehend. Some of these struggles may include stigmatization in society, discrimination in society, rejection of family members, and social isolation. If a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning community is experiencing problems with substance abuse or addiction, depression, anxiety, or other mental health problems, it is essential to find a rehab center that caters to their needs.
At Banyan Treatment Centers, our LGBTQ addiction treatment and mental health services are available to help those within the LGBTQ community who are struggling with addiction or mental health disorders. Our addiction and mental health treatment programs are available across our national treatment facilities to help those within the LGBTQ community.
We, as a team, realize that there is a need for culturally sensitive care in our community, specifically towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons. Many of the members of our team have experience working with the LGBTQ community and the effects of discrimination and trauma that they may have experienced.
A safe and affirming environment plays a crucial role in the treatment process. Our treatment centers are sensitive to a person's gender identity, sexual orientation, and experiences. We want the person to feel safe and supported during the recovery process. We offer gender-affirming housing options when necessary.
For transgender patients who do not match their identification documents and their gender identity, we make every attempt to place them in programs that match the gender they present so they feel comfortable and respected throughout the program.
LGBTQ+ Mental Health and Its Connection to Addiction
The relationship between mental health and addiction is very significant for a number of people in the LGBTQ community. According to research from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 20-30% of the LGBTQ community experience substance use disorders, while 9% experience the same in the general population.[1]
In addition, 1.9 million Americans who are lesbian, gay, or bisexual are struggling with both a substance abuse disorder and a mental health disorder, which is referred to as co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis.[2]
Mental health challenges are prevalent in LGBTQ persons due to discrimination, homophobia, isolation, or even rejection from family and spiritual communities. These challenges can cause anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotional distress.
There are even cases where an individual might turn to drugs and alcohol as a way of escaping these unpleasant feelings. It is because of these mental conditions that arise from substance abuse that special programs become necessary.
Studies have shown that adults who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, or bisexual are more than twice as likely to have used illicit drugs in comparison to those who identify themselves as heterosexual. However, despite these risks, a majority of the LGBTQ population does not get treated. It has been found that approximately 86% of the LGBTQ population with co-occurring disorders does not get treated for substance abuse.[4]
The fear of discrimination may also cause people to avoid seeking help. About one in seven in the LGBTQ community has reported avoiding medical care because of the fear of discrimination, and about one in eight has reported experiencing discriminatory treatment from healthcare providers.[5]
Factors That Contribute to Mental Health and Addiction in the LGBTQ Community
There are a number of social and environmental factors that may heighten the risk of addiction and mental health problems for LGBTQ people.
These may include:
Stigma and Discrimination
LGBTQ people may face discrimination and/or rejection based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. These may have a negative impact on mental health and may lead to anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
Internalized Shame and Identity Struggles
Another possibility is that a person may end up with internalized shame and identity issues. This may result in a person having shame, fear, and low self-esteem.
Social Isolation
Isolation and rejection by family, friends, and religious groups may also lead to mental health problems. Without support from the community, people may end up abusing alcohol and other drugs.
Lack of Inclusive Healthcare
Not all healthcare providers offer culturally competent care to the LGBTQ population. Lack of accessible mental health care services may deter people from seeking help.
Trauma and Minority Stress
The LGBTQ population experiences trauma related to discrimination, bullying, or violence. Trauma-informed care acknowledges the trauma and creates a safe environment.
Younger members of the LGBTQ community are more at risk compared to other people. This is according to research, where young people in the LGBTQ community are more likely to experience mental health concerns compared to other people. Mental health concerns range from depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
Nevertheless, it is worth noting that despite all these challenges, LGBTQ+ persons are very resilient if they are provided with supporting families, communities, and mental health services.

Addiction in the Transgender Community
There is an increased rate of drug and mental health problems in Transgender and nonbinary people compared to other LGBTQ+ persons.
Minority stress is one of the major causes of health disparities between transgender and non-binary individuals and other LGBTQ+ groups.
Minority stress is a kind of stress that is caused by social rejection.
Transgender people may face additional barriers in accessing healthcare services, employment opportunities, housing, and support systems within society. These barriers may increase the risk of health problems such as anxiety disorders, depression, trauma, and substance abuse.
For effective treatment of transgender people with an addiction problem, trauma-informed care, gender-affirming support, and mental health services need to be provided.
Substance Use Among Gay and Bisexual Men
Gay and bisexual men may be at a higher risk of substance use compared to heterosexual men. Research has indicated that gay men are more likely to abuse illicit drugs and may be at a higher risk of alcohol abuse.
Some of the commonly misused substances include:
- Methamphetamine
- Amyl nitrates (poppers)
- Ecstasy
- Cocaine
- Stimulants
Alcohol abuse is also common within some social environments, as alcohol is often used as a means of coping with discrimination.
Addiction treatment programs for LGBTQ individuals help individuals deal with the social, emotional, and psychological factors that cause addiction while at the same time helping them develop healthy coping strategies.
Substance Use Among Lesbian and Bisexual Women
Lesbian and bisexual women are also at a higher risk of substance abuse disorder. According to research findings, lesbian and bisexual women have a higher tendency of abusing alcohol compared to their heterosexual counterparts.[9]
Factors contributing to substance abuse in the LGBTQ community:
Discrimination, lack of support from family members, and social stigmas may cause substance abuse among women in the LGBTQ community.
After undergoing medical detoxification, an individual may undergo a specialized treatment program that helps in dealing with both substance abuse and mental health problems.
