Santa Rosa County, Florida: The Numbers Behind the Need

10,733 - residents of the city of Milton (U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 American Community Survey 5-year estimate)

20.9% – Milton adults estimated to have depression, more than one in five (CDC PLACES: depression, 2023 model-based estimate)

19.9% – Milton adults who report frequent mental distress, defined as 14 or more poor mental health days per month (CDC PLACES: frequent mental distress, 2023 model-based estimate)

5,185 – Florida overdose deaths in 2024 in which ethyl alcohol was detected (Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Medical Examiners Commission 2024 Annual Drug Report)

These figures provide context for mental health and substance use concerns in Milton and across Florida. Local estimates indicate that depression and frequent mental distress affect a notable portion of Milton adults, while the statewide alcohol statistic provides broader context about substance-related health concerns in Florida.

These statistics do not determine an individual's treatment needs. A clinical assessment can help identify the type and level of behavioral health care that may be appropriate.

Whether You're Searching for Someone You Love or for Yourself

Searching for behavioral health treatment often begins with questions about what type of care is appropriate, how quickly treatment can begin, what insurance may cover, and whether services are available close to home. These questions can apply whether you're exploring treatment for yourself, helping a family member, or gathering information for someone else.

For substance use concerns, a clinical assessment can help determine whether medical detox, residential treatment, outpatient care, or another level of support may be appropriate. Mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, or trauma may also affect treatment recommendations, particularly when they occur alongside substance use.

Milton residents can consider local and regional resources as well as in-person and virtual treatment options. Comparing available levels of care, insurance participation, location, and individual clinical needs can help clarify the next step.

Types of Treatment for Substance Use and Mental Health

Different levels of treatment provide different amounts of medical supervision, structure, and clinical support. A professional assessment can help determine which level of care may be appropriate based on individual needs.

Addiction Treatment

Medical Detox

Medically supervised care for people who may experience withdrawal symptoms or complications when stopping substance use.

Addiction Treatment

Residential / Inpatient Treatment

Live-in treatment that provides 24-hour support and a structured setting for people who need a higher level of care.

Addiction Treatment

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Structured treatment provided for several hours a day, several days per week, while allowing patients to live outside the facility.

Addiction Treatment

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Structured therapy provided several times per week for people who need more support than traditional outpatient care but do not require residential treatment.

Addiction Treatment

Outpatient & Telehealth

Less intensive treatment that may include counseling, psychiatric support, and virtual services, depending on the program and individual needs.

Dual Diagnosis

Dual Diagnosis (Co-Occurring) Care

Treatment for people experiencing both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety.

Addiction Treatment

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

The use of FDA-approved medications alongside counseling to treat certain substance use disorders.

Private Treatment Options Near Milton

Milton residents have access to several private treatment providers in Northwest Florida, each offering different levels of care and areas of specialization. Understanding what each program provides can help you choose the option that best fits your needs.

For example, Twelve Oaks Recovery Center in Navarre offers a full continuum of addiction treatment, including medical detox, residential care, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient programming (IOP), and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions. New Season Pensacola Metro specializes in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder through an outpatient model.

Does Insurance Cover Addiction and Mental-Health Treatment?

Insurance may cover mental health and substance use treatment, but coverage varies by plan, provider, and level of care. Before beginning treatment, verifying benefits can help clarify which services are covered and what deductibles, copays, or other out-of-pocket costs may apply.

Federal laws protect behavioral health coverage under many health plans. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires mental health and substance use disorder services to be included as essential health benefits in certain plans, while the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) establishes requirements for how covered behavioral health benefits are treated in relation to medical and surgical benefits.

Commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE may provide behavioral health benefits, depending on the individual plan and provider. Confirm coverage directly before treatment.

Banyan works with a range of insurance plans and offers free benefits verification to help determine available coverage and potential out-of-pocket costs before admission.

Why Traveling for Treatment Can Help

Traveling for treatment may be appropriate when the recommended level of care or specialized services are not available in a person's immediate area. The decision should be based on individual clinical needs as well as practical considerations such as distance, transportation, work, and family responsibilities.

For Milton residents, Banyan Gulf Breeze is located about 21 miles away and provides in-person substance use treatment, including medical detox, residential care, PHP, and IOP. Its location gives people seeking these services an option within Santa Rosa County rather than requiring long-distance travel.

Travel is not necessary or appropriate for everyone. For eligible patients whose needs can be addressed through outpatient care, virtual treatment may provide another option. A clinical assessment can help determine which treatment setting and level of care may be appropriate.

I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about Jordan and the support she has given me throughout my loved one’s time at Banyan. As my family liaison, Jordan became my go-to person from the very beginning. Whenever I had a question, needed help getting information to or from my loved one, or had something urgent happening with his elderly mother that needed to be communicated, Jordan was always there. She was responsive, dependable, and somehow always seemed to know exactly what I needed. But what made Jordan so special was that she went far beyond simply being a point of contact. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional journey for me as a family member, and Jordan became an enormous source of support. She listened when I needed someone to listen, helped me through some very difficult moments, and always treated me with genuine compassion and kindness. Jordan is loving, caring, funny, hopeful, and incredibly good at what she does. Even during some of the hardest days, she had a way of making things feel a little more manageable. I never felt like I was just another family member calling with another problem. I felt heard, cared about, and supported. When someone you love is struggling with addiction, the family goes through so much alongside them. Having someone like Jordan on the other end of the phone made a bigger difference to me than she probably realizes. I will always be incredibly grateful to Jordan for everything she has done for me and my family. Banyan is very fortunate to have her. ❤️
