Mary J. Blige’s Recovery Journey Revealed

Mary J. Blige has had extreme success in her music career since she got her start in 1989.

Out of her 13 studio albums, 8 of them went on to achieve multi-platinum worldwide sales. While her music career has been making headlines for years, in Self Magazine, Mary opens up about her toxic relationships and her triumph over addiction.

Mary J. Blige’s Drug Addiction & Family Issues

Mary started using drugs as a teenager, and as she rose to fame, her substance abuse worsened. She said that she started to drink and use drugs to cope with what she had to unfortunately experience as a child, being sexually abused at just 5 years old.

Though she’s always been open and honest, there are still some parts of herself that she chooses to keep to herself and that extends to her family as well. Only at 33 years old, did she finally tell her mother about how she was molested.

For years, Mary was resistant to get help from anyone and turned to drugs and alcohol instead. Mary says, “You’re taking drugs so you can go out and feel courageous or go out and feel beautiful or whatever. You’re doing it to cover up something.” Blige says “she had to address the demons within that she was attempting to quiet by getting high and drunk and face the pain that came with losing them as a crutch”. Finally, Mary took steps to get sober. She credits her now ex-husband for helping her recover from her drug and alcohol addiction.
