Early Experiences That Shaped Her Path
Joy was adopted as an infant from the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, India. Her childhood included significant challenges, including family instability, domestic violence, and exposure to untreated mental health struggles.
As she grew up, Joy faced her own emotional battles, including anger, depression, and feelings of abandonment. These experiences did not define her, but they did shape her. They helped her understand pain, resilience, and the importance of emotional care, all of which now guide her professional goals.
Finding Strength Through Adversity
Later in life, Joy faced another major challenge when she underwent two brain surgeries to remove a brain tumor. The experience was physically exhausting and emotionally overwhelming, forcing her to confront fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability.
Through therapy, parenting education, anger management, and personal development, Joy used this time to grow. She gained a deeper understanding of emotional awareness, healthy communication, self-compassion, and resilience, skills she hopes to pass on to future clients.
Looking Ahead to a Future in Counseling
Joy plans to focus her counseling career on individuals affected by trauma, neurological recovery, and complex medical histories. She hopes to make quality mental health care more accessible, especially for people who have traditionally faced barriers to treatment.
“This scholarship lifts a huge weight off my shoulders,” Joy shared. “It allows me to put my full energy into learning, growing, and becoming the kind of counselor I always wished I had.”
