Marshall Mathers also knows as rapper Eminem, took to Instagram to post that he is 12 years sober!

The picture of the 12-year sobriety coin is captioned with, “Clean dozen, in the books! I’m not afraid.”  We would like to give a big congratulations to Eminem on his sobriety!

Though he is in long term sobriety, it was a long road to get there as Eminem struggled with an addiction to prescription pills. Back in 2007, Eminem suffered a near death experience from substances such as Xanax, Vicodin, Ambien, and Valium. His organs were shutting down, but luckily, he made it to the hospital just in time. A month after Eminem’s near-death overdose, he relapsed, but realized he needed to get clean because he wanted to be there for his children.

Eminem tried rehab but didn’t like the experience as fellow patients were asking him for autographs and he couldn’t concentrate on his problems that he had to face head on. Mathers did not seek formal treatment and instead, chose to self-detox and work with a rehab counselor.

The Dangers of Self Detoxing

Self-detoxing is dangerous and is accompanied with withdrawal symptoms that can become severe and possibly life threatening because you are unable to get medical attention as quickly as if you were in a medical detox program. We are happy that Eminem’s sobriety has been successful for so long and we wish him continued success. Having 12 years of sobriety is a huge milestone and the fact that Eminem has continued to be successful in his rap career is proof that sobriety is obtainable, possible, and doesn’t have to hinder your goals and achievements.
