Meet Our Medical Director at Banyan Stuart
Dr. Steven R. Scanlan, M.D.
Steven R. Scanlan, M.D., is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine and practices in South Florida. He specializes in office-based detoxification from alcohol, opiates/opioids (including methadone and buprenorphine/Subutex/Suboxone), benzodiazepines, and marijuana. Dr. Scanlan has safely performed thousands of detoxifications in the outpatient setting and is considered an expert and pioneer in the field of addiction medicine. His professional interests include relapse prevention, dual diagnosis treatment (for example, bipolar disorder combined with heroin addiction), and psychopharmacology. He has authored papers and presented on several subjects in his field.
Dr. Scanlan graduated Cum Laude in Zoology from the Miami University of Ohio. He completed medical school at Northeastern Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, and graduated in the top third of his class. He completed his intern year at Tampa General Hospital at the University of South Florida College of Medicine where he spent half of his year as a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine and the other half of the year as a resident in the Department of Anesthesiology. His residency in Psychiatry was completed at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
His work experience includes being an attending physician at the Watershed Drug Rehabilitation Center, a Staff Psychiatrist at Armor Correctional Services for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Medical Director at the Amy Winehouse Foundation, Florida Medical Director of AWARE Recovery Care, Medical Director of Olympus PHP, and Medical Director of Banyan Detox. From 2009 to the present, Dr. Scanlan has served as the owner and Medical Director of Palm Beach Outpatient Detox in Boca Raton, Florida. He has also successfully trained other board-certified Psychiatrists in his method of safe, outpatient detoxification based on a manual he authored titled The Scanlan Method for Safe Outpatient Detoxification.
Dr. Scanlan is also active in Maintenance of Certification (MOC), for both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Preventive Medicine–Addiction Medicine. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and ferrets, tennis, and being active in the recovery community.

An Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) is a registered nurse who completed graduate-level education and has the primary responsibility of caring for the patient. The roles of licensed ARNPs include:
- Examining patients and establishing diagnoses according to client history, physical examination, and other forms of care
- Admitting, managing, and discharging patients to and from health care centers
- Ordering, collecting, performing, and interpreting diagnostic examinations
- Managing health care by identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating a care plan for the individual
- Prescribing therapies and medical equipment for treatment
- Prescribing medications, when necessary
Substance abuse nurse practitioners offer addiction recovery medical services to treat clients in our facilities. Nurses on our staff have a combination of advanced degrees and certifications in mental health and substance abuse nursing to ensure our clients receive the best care possible.
Medical directors have years of experience managing health care facilities. Their qualifications must address the various responsibilities of the role.
Like other addiction treatment facilities, Banyan involves a hierarchy of professional addiction specialists in leadership roles. At the top of this hierarchy is the medical director (MD).
Our medical director provides oversight on all our facilities’ medical-related duties. They ensure that all medical staff members follow guidelines, protocol, and provide high-quality care to clients while ensuring their team members’ needs are being met.
Typical roles of a medical director in addiction treatment include:
- Enforcing an environment in which medical professionals can safely and effectively work
- Developing policies and protocols that match the health care institution’s guidelines to ensure client safety and treatment efficacy
- Supervising and evaluating medical staff operations
- Working with institutional leadership to meet the health care system’s goals
- Staying up-to-date on the latest medical advancements and changes through continuing education
- Managing all medical departments of their facility
- Ensuring that medical staff members meet institutional expectations, including certifications
- Recruiting and managing medical team members
