Nestled within the allure of Port Orange, Florida's picturesque landscapes is a troubling underbelly known as "Meth Island." This mysterious locale, once renowned for its serene shores, has become synonymous with a deepening crisis fueled by the scourge of methamphetamine. Despite the idyllic backdrop of blue waters, the island’s beauty is overshadowed by drug use and squatters who have built illegal and dangerous makeshift homes and amenities, such as a four-story treehouse, trampoline, welcome center, and unfinished swimming pool. Today, the experts at our Florida rehabs will explore the recent news about the Florida meth island and law enforcement’s efforts in trying to clear the area.

What Is Methamphetamine (Meth)?
Commonly referred to as meth, methamphetamine is a potent and highly addictive central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. Chemically similar to amphetamine, methamphetamine has a more pronounced impact on the CNS. Meth is typically sold and used in crystalline form, commonly known as crystal meth, and can be ingested through various routes, including oral consumption, snorting, smoking, or injecting.
Methamphetamine works by increasing the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, in the brain. This surge in dopamine causes intense feelings of euphoria, heightened energy, increased alertness, and a decreased appetite. However, these effects are short-lived, often leading individuals to repeatedly use the drug in pursuit of the initial euphoric high, which marks methamphetamine’s addictive nature.
Beyond its initial pleasurable effects, meth addiction has serious consequences for physical and mental health. Long-term use can lead to severe dental issues ("meth mouth"), skin sores (“meth mites”), weight loss, and sleep disturbances. Moreover, chronic use can lead to cognitive deficits, mood disturbances, paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior. Given its addictive potential and the range of detrimental health effects, understanding the nuances of methamphetamine is crucial for professionals within addiction treatment facilities working to combat its impact on individuals and communities.
Where Is Meth Island Florida?
Located in Port Orange, Florida, Meth Island got its name from the methamphetamine use on the island. The name reflects the unfortunate reality of the island becoming home to meth users and squatters who are producing, distributing, and using the drug.
In recent news, safety concerns on Meth Island have prompted trespass notices at squatter camps. Law enforcement has discovered numerous wooden structures spread across an island north of the Dunlawton Bridge, which they say must be removed.
In June 2023, Port Orange and South Daytona police issued trespass notices in the area where they found a four-story treehouse, trampoline, welcome center, and unfinished swimming pool that posed safety issues. Authorities believe these structures were built to attract teens and young adults to the island.
Kevin Pedri, a South Daytona police lieutenant who participated in the Meth Island operation, said, “[They go] to these islands and start having fun, and then you start getting the alcohol in there, and they are jumping down on these trampolines – that’s when an accident is going to wind up happening.” Local law enforcement contacted the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to obtain authorization to execute the trespass notices, as the island technically belongs to the state.
Drug Use on Meth Island in Florida
Pedri also shared that it’s common for residents to bring tents and spend the night on the island to simply “enjoy it as it is.”1 However, the unusual structures found by law enforcement have also revealed some drug-related behavior. Pedri stated that there is evidence of substance abuse on the island, including drug paraphernalia, like needles and empty alcohol bottles.
Additional Risks of Widespread Debris in the Intracostal
In addition to the suspected substance use on the island, authorities also believe that the onset of hurricane season can bring strong storms that could spread debris from the island in the intracostal. This would pose safety risks for those on and near the island.
“All that stuff is going to get thrown all over the Intracoastal and damage other boats, or who knows how far some of the wood can launch and possibly damage other property as well,” Pedri said.1 The structures on the island can also affect its mangrove population, which is crucial as a natural defense against storm surges.
