Ariana Grande continues to open up about her struggles with depression and PTSD, taking to Twitter and Instagram to share her experiences with the world.
For years, the “Thank You, Next” singer has been candid about her battle with mental health, but most recently, we have seen more of what the pop star has really been dealing with.
On April 12th, Grande shared a screenshot of a group text to her Instagram story of several brain scans with the caption “hilarious and terrifying…not a joke.” The image showed side-by-side scans of a healthy brain and one with PTSD. The scans were followed by 4 images of her brain which were similar to the brain with PTSD, with many highlighted regions. [1]

After the Manchester bombing in 2017, Grande opened up about suffering from PTSD. Last summer she told British Vogue, “I don’t think I’ll ever know how to talk about it and not cry.” [2]
She has also used social media as an outlet to discuss her depression after saying she didn’t think touring was good for her mental health and feels “empty.” Two days after sharing a quote about depression from Jim Carrey on Instagram, she received a response from longtime idol on Twitter. Along with a quote from his teacher/friend, Jeff Foster, Carrey included the message, “I admire your openness. I wish you freedom and peace. I feel blessed to have such a gifted admirer.” [3]

It is no wonder why the singer feels “emotionally depleted,” as she has experienced so much in such a short time. While she explains she has always had anxiety, events within the last few years most certainly have added to her struggles; the Manchester bombing in 2017, her breakup with fiancé Pete Davidson, and the death of her ex, Mac Miller.
Grande’s battle with mental health is a clear example as to how real and prevalent this issue is. No matter who you are, depression, anxiety, and PTSD can take hold of your life.
