Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Mental Health

Back in 2016, Selena Gomez suddenly canceled the remainder of her Revival tour to seek treatment for her mental health issues.

She checked into a facility for 90 days to get her mental health back on track. Now, over two years later, Selena is back with her new album, Rare. She did a recent interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beat 1, talking about mental health and working on herself.

“Well, first off, I’m a huge advocate for mental health,” Gomez says. “I have this dream of mine that’s beyond all of this where I think that personally, it should be required in schools to be taught dialectical behavior therapy.” At Banyan Mental Health, we offer this program, which helps our patients find balance with typically opposing views in their lives. After treatment, you should be better able to manage your emotions and your stress.

Selena Gomez Discusses Mental Health and Social Media

Selena Gomez’s mental health has been a struggle for her for many years, but she talks about how medication and therapy really helped change her life for the better.  She cut out toxic things in her life, including social media. She says, “First off, there was a million things that I didn’t want to see. I would see them over and over and over again. Then I’m comparing….you have FOMO. Everyone’s life looks amazing, and that happens to me, too. I’m like, ‘Well, what am I? I’m missing the plot here. Right? How come it’s so fun for everyone else?”

Selena went on to say that what really got to her were the accounts that were talking about her body, her face, features, her choices, etc. With social media and body image, sometimes it becomes too much pressure because you’re comparing yourself. That’s when Selena deleted her Instagram app. Everything changed for her at that point.  Gomez said that it was like a fresh start and she began creating her album, Rare.

We are so happy that Selena Gomez is being so open about her struggles with mental health. She is helping to reduce the stigma that surround mental illness and mental health disorders. Many people hesitate to seek treatment due to fear of judgement, but you don’t have to. A brighter future is waiting for you. You just have to take the first step.

Mental health disorders are a challenge, but mental health therapies can help anyone who is facing depression, thoughts of suicide, etc.

If you are struggling with mental health issues, know that there is help available. Our team at Banyan Mental Health can help get you on the right path and guide you to a better tomorrow.
