Luke Wollet’s Addiction and Recovery

The Banyan Treatment Centers family is proud to have former football star and recovery advocate Luke Wollet as part of our Community Outreach Team. Luke’s story is truly motivating, having recovered from a prescription pill and heroin addiction that originated from a football injury. Now, after nearly five years sober, Luke works with us here at Banyan helping others who are also struggling with substance abuse get the drug or alcohol addiction treatment they need.

Luke was a rising football star throughout high school and college. He lived, breathed, and ate football. He often jokes that football was his first addiction. He was an outstanding football player at Poland Seminary High School where he crafted his skills and learned everything he could about his favorite sport. He eventually moved on to play as a safety at Kent State University. Luke’s future in the NFL proved to be promising until he was sidelined with a knee injury during his last season at Kent State. To Luke, football was an outlet where he could express himself while doing something he loved. In times of hardship, he’d turn to his favorite game for solace. Unfortunately, his injury cut his football career short and led him to drug addiction.

Like many athletes with addictions, Wollet’s prescription drug and heroin addiction began with an injury. Not only did he become physically addicted to painkillers, but he also used substance abuse as a coping mechanism to deal with the emotional pain of his football career being cut short. When he grew tolerant and was no longer able to obtain these prescription drugs, he moved onto heroin. Luke’s family was also out of the picture at this point, hurting over his condition. Because of his skills in college, the New Orleans Saints offered him a tryout; however, this chance was overshadowed by Luke Wollet’s addiction. By this point, he couldn’t function without heroin. It wasn’t until his father visited him in Cincinnati and advised him to get addiction treatment that he decided to make a change. With the help of Banyan and our Faith in Recovery program, Luke developed his relationship with God and achieved sobriety.

Luke Wollet’s recovery had a rocky start, but with the help of our nationwide drug and alcohol rehab, he was able to achieve his goals. Now Luke works for Banyan Treatment Centers as a community outreach representative for our faith-based addiction treatment center, Faith in Recovery. He currently travels the country sharing his recovery story and instilling hope in those who think they’re alone in their addiction.

Luke Wollet’s sobriety is proof that while addiction doesn’t discriminate, recovery is possible. If you or someone you know is battling addiction and is hesitant to get help, Banyan is here for you.
