Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino made a name for himself on the popular MTV show Jersey Shore that initially aired in 2009. The show followed a group of Italian American fist-pumping partygoers from New Jersey and their misadventures with alcohol, drama, and relationships.
Mike “The Situation’s” Addiction & RecoveryMike “The Situation’s” rising fame landed him a spot on Dancing with The Stars, but an injury started a downward spiral for the star. Like many others, The Situation became addicted to the painkillers he had been prescribed. What viewers didn’t see off camera was that Mike was battling a drug addiction from opiates. Add cameras, alcohol, and the party scene, and Mike’s already growing addiction was exacerbated in the spotlight.
After hitting his rock bottom, Mike “The Situation” got sober with the help of an opioid detox, treatment, and his wife, Lauren Sorrentino’s support. Even after a trying time, including eight-months in federal prison for tax evasion in 2019, The Situation’s addiction is now a thing of the past. He admits to not having the oversight of his finances as he should have and letting his addiction get out of control, but these experiences have opened his eyes and prompted The Situation to help others get sober as well.
The Situation & Banyan Treatment Centers Stand Together Against AddictionThe Situation’s addiction to painkillers is just one example of the toll that the opioid crisis has taken on the country. In 2017, 1.7 million Americans suffered from a substance use disorder related to the misuse of prescription opioid pain relievers.1 Several people across the country are struggling with opioids but may neglect to get professional help.
At Banyan Treatment Centers, we want to change that and have enlisted Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and his wife, Lauren Pesce Sorrentino, for help. The former reality TV star started to openly share his story with the public after getting sober, but The Situation and Lauren Sorrentino became Recovery Advocates at Banyan in late 2019 to help us spread the word on the importance of treatment and recovery even further. The partnership began in an effort to help destigmatize addiction and celebrate Mike’s now four years of sobriety.
After struggling with addiction himself, The Situation has personal insight on the recovery process and how sobriety can change a person’s life for the better. Lauren herself also has experience with the damage a substance abuse disorder can cause. She openly talks about the loss of her brother Christopher from an overdose. Her relationship with Mike started even before he was famous from the Jersey Shore, and she has been the driving force behind the positive change in Mike.
Part of the 12 steps is to give back and to help someone achieve sobriety. Mike is carrying out this mission by joining Banyan. He and Lauren are proud to be Recovery Advocates helping people who are struggling with mental health and addiction disorders. Since joining the Banyan Team, Mike and Lauren made a surprise visit to Faith in Recovery in Pompano Beach, FL. The patients were able to sit down with them and talk about their experiences, struggles, and journey to recovery. The couple has also been more vocal about Mike’s sobriety and why treatment is so important through channels like social media and in interviews. Their goal is to not only help lower the stigma surrounding substance abuse disorders but also encourage those who are struggling to get addiction treatment.
Be Like MikeBoth addiction and recovery are different for everyone, but if a wild party animal from the Jersey Shore can do it, so can you. Like many people who struggle with a drug or alcohol addiction, Mike “The Situation” may have done some things he regretted, but he has now made his sobriety a priority and strives to maintain it every day. He has matured and changed his lifestyle for the better and so can you. We offer various addiction treatment programs nationwide so that we can help people like you or your loved one not only overcome a substance abuse problem but also enjoy long-lasting sobriety.
