TMS Mental Health Treatment at Banyan

Depression (major depressive disorder or unipolar depression) is prevalent, especially in America. Regardless of how unusual the condition is, it needs to be approached with precaution and treatment. Symptoms can affect how individuals feel, think, and handle everyday activities. At Banyan, our mental health and addiction treatment facilities are composed of highly skilled professionals and specialists who create individualized plans for each of our patients to ensure that their needs are met while on their journey to recovery. Among the wide variety of therapeutic methods and programs we offer is TMS mental health treatment.

What Is TMS?

When medication and psychotherapy are ineffective, the FDA-approved treatment for depression, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy, uses magnetic fields to stimulate areas of the brain that are believed to contribute to mood disorders. For example, the prefrontal cortex seems to be less active when experiencing depressive episodes.

The TMS procedure can generate an electric current and cause the area’s neurons to begin firing. Usually, this will reduce symptoms and help people recover from mental illness. Thankfully, TMS in depression treatment does not produce synthetic side effects commonly found with other therapies involving antidepressants and other medications used to manage symptoms of mental illness.

How Does TMS Work?

Typically during TMS mental health treatment, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp near the forehead. The electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse which stimulates the nerve cells in the region of the brain involved in mood control. The stimulation impacts how the brain is working and works to ease anxiety and depression symptoms while improving mood.

In addition to regulating mood and improving symptoms, other benefits of TMS services for mental health include:

  • FDA Approved (which means no worrying about any unregulated or unsafe procedures)
  • Non-invasive
  • No medications
  • Convenient sessions that work with your schedule
  • Safe and effective

Like the other unique programs and therapies offered at Banyan rehab locations, the goals of TMS mental health treatment is to promote all-around healing and improve mental health.

TMS Therapy at Banyan Rehab Locations

Specialists at Banyan locations will go over all of the pros and cons of TMS therapy with you. If you are worried about any of the transcranial magnetic stimulation side effects, just ask! Common TMS therapy side effects include headache, scalp discomfort from stimulation, tingling or facial twitches, and possible lightheadedness, all of which usually go away after a visit and occur less frequently as clients are exposed more to treatment.

More serious, yet rare, side effects include seizures, bipolar manic episodes, and hearing loss. If you are struggling with anxiety or bipolar depression, ask our therapists if TMS therapy or one of our other unique therapy programs is right for you. We can help you understand the benefits of TMS for depression and anxiety and find out whether it complements your treatment plan.

Our mental health treatment options, like TMS, are available to the following clients:

Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy at Banyan is an a la carte service, meaning it’s an additional service offered to patients that is not included in our regular programs. Therefore, clients must ask our specialists more about this form of treatment and discuss a payment form that works for them.
