What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective psychotherapy technique that targets a person’s emotional and physical responses to negative emotions. This unique form of treatment has been used to help people who suffer from problems like trauma, nightmares, panic attacks, anxiety, addiction, and PTSD. EMDR has proven to be an asset to addiction treatment and mental health treatment. EMDR therapy helps individuals suffering from mental illness or addiction identify and process traumatic memories or other experiences that may be contributing to their ailments. With our EMDR program for addiction, patients can identify the emotional and physical sources of their substance abuse and how to overcome them.

At our drug and alcohol treatment center in Pompano, we offer a variety of programs to treat different forms of substance abuse and mental illness. Our patient’s care and safety are our top priority, and we pride ourselves in providing the best care possible.

The Benefits EMDR for Substance Abuse

EMDR therapy utilizes a technique referred to as bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation can be visual, auditory, or tactile and occurs in a rhythmic left-right pattern. This stimulation could occur from watching a clock hand move left to right and back again. A form of auditory bilateral stimulation could be listening to tones that jump back and forth between the left and right ear. This phenomenon was discovered in the late 1980s by Francine Shapiro when she accidentally experienced bilateral stimulation. She realized that bilateral stimulation could help alleviate the distress brought on by thoughts of a traumatic experience.1

EMDR for substance abuse can be beneficial to someone in recovery for a variety of reasons. People often turn to substance abuse to cope with mental illness or traumatic experiences. The symptoms of mental health problems can make it nearly impossible for a person to tend to their responsibilities and loved ones. At Banyan, our EMDR treatment for addiction can help our patients identify the emotional and physical factors that tie them to their addiction and learn how to safely manage them.

The Benefits of EMDR for Mental Health

Mental disorders, like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can be caused by a traumatic or terrifying experience. Symptoms like nightmares, panic attacks, anxiety, and other negative emotions can deteriorate a person’s mind and character. It can be difficult for someone to overcome a mental disorder without mental health treatment. Many individuals who battle with mental illness may feel stuck in their own negative thoughts and emotions. EMDR can teach people how to stop the cycle of negative thinking right when it starts.

Alongside our residential mental health program, our EMDR program in Pompano can teach patients how to detach their thoughts from the traumatic experience and learn how to manage these thoughts in a rational and healthy way. EMDR helps people relax, avoid obsessing over distressing thoughts, and make symptoms seem smaller and more treatable.
