What to Expect During Detox

When you’re living with an active drug addiction or alcohol use disorder, your body has grown accustomed to the substances you’re abusing.

To get sober, you need to detox and end the chemical dependency. At Banyan Detox Boca Raton, our team offers medically monitored detox to help patients safely and comfortably detox. If you’ve never detoxed before, here’s what you can expect when working through the process at our drug and alcohol detox center in Boca.

What to Expect During Drug Detox

There are numerous drugs that create challenging symptoms during detox. The drugs act on the mind and body in differing ways, creating different detox experiences. For example, during cocaine detox, a patient may experience withdrawal symptoms such as muscle aches or agitation. In general, you can expect to experience withdrawals within about 12-24 hours of your last drug use. These symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Digestion Issues
  • Night Sweats
  • Sleep Problems
  • Restlessness
  • Poor Concentration
  • Hot or Cold Flashes

These common withdrawal symptoms are often associated with detoxing from drugs such as benzos, opioids, cannabis, prescription pills, and inhalants. [1] These symptoms are not a guarantee, not everyone experiences these withdrawal symptoms. But they are common for many people, and with medically monitored detox, they can be easily managed.

What to Expect During Alcohol Detox

Just as with drug detoxification, alcohol detox can include withdrawals. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal generally appear within 24 hours of a person’s last drink. [2] During alcohol detox, you can expect symptoms of withdrawal to start slowly, worsen, and then taper off. Withdrawal symptoms experienced during alcohol detox can include:

  • Tremors
  • Confusion
  • Delirium Tremens
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Agitation
  • Blood Pressure Changes

These symptoms will vary from patient to patient. For example, delirium tremens, aka the DTs, is a particularly challenging symptom of alcohol withdrawal. This acute state of alcohol withdrawal usually starts 2-5 days into detox, and it can be deadly if not treated. But, only 5% of patients experience the DTs when detoxing from alcohol. [2]

Your Detox Process Is Unique

No two detoxification processes are the same. Each patient will have their own challenges in detox, but they can all experience the freedom of sobriety if they’re ready to work through this necessary step of treatment.
