John Sory

John Sory brings nearly 30 years of experience in healthcare management to his role as the Chief Executive Officer of Banyan Treatment Centers.

Formerly, he served as the CEO of Vohra Wound Physicians, the largest national wound care specialty practice focused primarily on the long term care industry. Previously, he was the Chief Executive, UHealth Regional Alliance for the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) where he oversaw affiliations and expansion, health plan relationships, and population health new reimbursement models. Prior to that role, he was the Chief Development Officer for eResearch Technology and led Pfizer Health Solutions (PHS), a wholly owned, health services subsidiary of Pfizer Inc..

He received his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and earned his B.A. from Vanderbilt University. He also completed an executive management program at the Harvard Business School.

CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER

Dr. Darrin Mangiacarne

Dr. Darrin Mangiacarne graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). He received his master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed his family medicine residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. Darrin became the second addiction medicine fellow at Geisinger Health System. He is a Certified Physician Executive and a Medical Review Officer.

Dr. Mangiacarne is board certified in family medicine from the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) and addiction medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) and (AOBFP). He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (DFASAM) and a fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine (FAOAAM). He also currently holds the title of Secretary/Treasurer for the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Mangiacarne has worked in the addiction field for the past 11 years in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He co-chaired the Indiana Attorney General’s Task Force on addiction. Dr. Mangiacarne is the Past-President of the Indiana Society of Addiction Medicine. Before joining Banyan, he served as the Regional Medical Director for another program, overseeing their medication assisted treatment programming throughout the Midwest. He is the Chief Medical Officer and a proud addition to the Banyan team.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Michael Evanoff

Michael Evanoff serves as the CFO and  brings over 30 years financial experience and 10 years healthcare experience to Banyan Treatment Centers.

Formerly, Michael was the CFO of Vohra Wound Physicians, the largest national wound care specialty practice focused primarily on the long-term care industry. Previously, he was the Chief Financial Officer of Automated HealthCare Solutions, a leading provider of technology enabled, medication claims processing solution for physicians. Prior to that, Michael was the CFO of Channel Intelligence, a leading e-commerce platform that was acquired by Google, and is now a part of the Google Shopping platform.  Previously, Michael was a financial and operational leader in Lincoln Financial, DirecTV Latin America, and ExxonMobil.

Michael earned his MBA from the Fox School of Business at Temple University, and he graduated magna cum laude from Marquette University with a B.S. in Business Administration, specializing Finance and Marketing.

VICE PRESIDENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES

Joe Bozza

During his 20+ years as a Human Resources professional, Joe has set up and managed HR departments for South Florida companies in a variety of industries: healthcare, software tech, construction, retail, and currently, addiction treatment. His skills and experience encompass many components of HR and include recruitment, on-boarding, benefits, payroll, HRIS, compliance/policies, employee relations, management coaching, and training.

Joe has notable success meeting large volume staffing needs for rapidly growing companies, recruiting to fill 90+ new positions per year. Always interested in improving processes and efficiencies, during his career Joe has performed the role of Project Manager implementing five HRIS/Payroll systems including UltiPro.

After achieving his SPHR, Joe was an instructor for the SHRM Learning System PHR/SPHR Certification prep class at Florida Atlantic University for three years. Early in his HR career, while managing HR departments in the healthcare industry, Joe held positions of Vice President and then President of the South Florida Healthcare Human Resources Association (SFHHRA).

Joe believes that his role as a Human Resources Professional is to work closely with his organization’s owners and senior executives to help them achieve growth, and create and maintain a great place to work.

Jeff Houchin

Jeff Houchin has been working in the addiction field for 14 years. He started working at Jerome Golden Center for Behavioral Health (formerly Oakwood Center of the Palm Beaches) after graduating from Indiana University with a Bachelors degree in Operations Management. His passion for the industry was inspired by the impact addiction had on his family, and now he is driven by the Banyan community and their passion for helping others in need. Jeff joined Banyan in June of 2018, when Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches was acquired by Banyan. His favorite part about working for Banyan is giving users tools to make their jobs easier.

VICE PRESIDENT OF COMPLIANCE AND QUALITY

Sherilyn Toro

Sherilyn was born and raised in New Jersey before relocating to South Florida in 2010. She was Banyan’s first female sober living client and became a Behavioral Healthcare Technician in 2014. Because of her remarkable work ethic, she was quickly promoted to Program Supervisor, then Director of Intensive Outpatient Operations. Sherilyn’s qualities were noticed by upper management, and she eventually moved into the Quality Assurance department as a QA Coordinator. After a few years, Sherilyn was promoted to National Director of Quality Assurance and is presently our Vice President of Compliance and Quality.

Sherilyn oversees all facility regulatory affairs and quality assurance, ensuring that Banyan adheres to the highest standards so that our patients receive the best possible care. She also played a critical role in launching and maintaining twelve additional locations nationally. Sherilyn has a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in healthcare administration from Southern New Hampshire University. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration at Johns Hopkins University, with two specializations: (1) private and public sector leadership and (2) healthcare management innovation and technology. 

Sherilyn says sobriety, “gives me the power to live life presently, joyfully, and wholly. The shame, guilt, self-hatred, and hopelessness that I was trapped in for so long has disappeared, and I am blessed with opportunities to use those experiences to help others.” When asked what advice she would offer to someone struggling, she says, “advice is what people who haven’t been in our shoes give. We offer our experiences, then and now, as a guide for others to follow. Life is what it is supposed to be today; sometimes rough and sometimes blissful.”

Sara Thompson

Sara is a seasoned attorney with a background in healthcare contracting, compliance, managed care, strategic planning, and risk mitigation.  Formerly, Sara served as an Associate VP for the Baptist Health System in Kentucky. In this role, she successfully negotiated, drafted, and reviewed various contracts and licensing agreements. She also served as the senior negotiator in all payor contracting initiatives. 

Sara also served as a Manager of Managed Care Contracting for Brookdale Senior Living, where she collaboratively developed and launched internal contract processes and negotiated enterprise-wide agreements with major payors. Prior to Brookdale, Sara worked for Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, as the Director of Contracting and Compliance.  Sara also has experience in risk management and worked closely with outside counsel.

Sara received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky, her Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville, and is an active member of the Kentucky Bar Association. Sara is certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) and earned a Lean Six-Sigma certification.

Sara recently relocated to South Florida in 2023 from Louisville, Kentucky.  She enjoys a variety of things, including but not limited to: taking naps, working out at Orange Theory Fitness (OTF), snacking on Reduced-Fat Cheez Its, frequenting the dog park with her English White Labrador, Cooper, and visiting her family in Kentucky.

Alyssa Shapper

NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF DIGITAL MARKETING

Alyssa Shapper

Alyssa Shapper serves as the National Director of Digital Marketing for Banyan Treatment Centers. Alyssa was born in Queens, New York, raised in Central New Jersey, and moved to South Florida in 2011.

Prior to Banyan, Alyssa began working in the treatment field in 2012 as an Alumni Coordinator residing in the marketing department. She quickly fell in love with marketing and transitioned into a full-time role, excelling in analytics, project management, content creation, social media marketing, and local marketing. It was there she learned from the top leaders in the field specializing in addiction treatment. During this time, she was also introduced to the largest global CRM, Salesforce, for which she decided to expand her knowledge to include. Alyssa graduated the Salesforce University for multiple courses in Administration and Development in 2014 and has led company integrations in an abundance of industries.

Alyssa joined the Banyan team in 2016. She has produced a multitude of integrated campaigns and events in the behavioral health and addictions field. Through strategic marketing campaign concepts, Alyssa has established Banyan as an industry leader and a national household name. Some of these campaign concepts are but not limited to SEO, SEM, extensive video production, celebrity endorsements, television production, and social advertising. Alyssa has been an integral member of our Joint Venture/Acquisition and our PR/Advertising teams, where she has helped Banyan grow into an industry leader with 16 locations across the nation.

CORPORATE NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Christopher Kaufteil

Moving to Coral Springs, Florida from White Plains, New York in the early 1990s, Chris faced his own battles with addiction during the pill mill epidemic in Broward County between 2010 and 2015. He sought help from many treatment centers, including several state funded programs and private facilities. The consequences of his substance abuse continued to pile up until he finally surrendered in early 2015, embracing the recovery process. Chris started his role in the addiction field at The Beachcomber in 2015. In order to increase his knowledge in helping others in this industry, Chris graduated with a Bachelors in Marketing from Florida Atlantic University. He remains passionate about helping others obtain sobriety due to the loss of his brother Keith in 2011 to an oxycodone overdose. As a result of this tremendous loss, Chris vowed to do whatever it takes to make sure that people are informed about the dangers of drug addiction, and how proper treatment can help to arrest this deadly disease.

Danielle Menendez

Danielle Menendez is a Florida native, born and raised in Miami. Danielle moved to the Martin County area in 1997. Danielle’s career began as a BHT (Behavioral Health Technician) in an all-male mental health prison. It was there that Danielle found her passion for helping people, especially those with dual diagnosis. She decided to obtain her nursing license in order to further her education to combat the Substance Abuse epidemic. After obtaining her L.P.N., Danielle began working for a detox facility. A year later, Danielle decided to become an R.N.

Danielle began her career with Banyan in Downtown Stuart as the Director of Nursing for our Detox. She has built a dynamic nursing department with nurses from various medical backgrounds, from the ER to Mental Health specialties, in order to offer our clients the most caring and knowledgeable nursing staff possible. Today she holds the position of National Director of Admission Approvals, assisting our admissions team with the medical approvals necessary to treat our patients.

Danielle plans to continue her schooling in the near future. She plans on obtaining her master’s degree in nursing and become a Nurse Practitioner.

Renee Ross

Renee’s joined the Banyan Treatment Centers team in 2015 as an overnight Behavioral Health Technician. Her dedication and hard work led to rapid promotions, first to IOP Operations Supervisor, and then to Mental Health Case Manager at Banyan Boca. After three years in that role, she was appointed National Director of Case Management, overseeing the case management departments for Banyan’s facilities nationwide. Renee ensures that clients receive appropriate aftercare plans, meets weekly with teams to develop strategies, upholds documentation standards required by each state, and provides unwavering support for all facility teams. She is committed to maintaining top-quality mental health and substance abuse services for Banyan’s clients.

Anthony Acampora

Anthony Acampora is the National Director of Faith-Based Services and Chaplain at Banyan Treatment Centers. He has a Masters degree in Ministry. Anthony is a published author of three books, national speaker and writer with articles published in numerous international magazines.

Anthony is the former host of the Faith in Recovery Radio Show with forty six shows airing in Orlando, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. He is a segment host on America’s Invisible Heroes Talk Show. Most recently, Anthony was awarded the 2019 Professional of the Year by Broward National Recovery. In 2018, Anthony was selected as a Global Goodwill Ambassador representing the USA. In 2015, the National Alliance of Mental Illness, Broward Country awarded Anthony its Volunteer Recognition Award. In 2014, the National Association of Social Workers, Broward County awarded Anthony its Public Citizen of the Year.

Anthony is the host of The Faith in Recovery Show.  The Faith in Recovery Radio Show with Anthony Acampora previously aired on Faith-Talk Atlanta, AM 970 and in the Orlando area on “The Word “94.9FM & AM 950.

Jonelle Brennan

Jonelle Brennan was born and raised in New York State and has been working in the field of addiction treatment since 2014. She currently serves as the National Director of Admissions at Banyan Treatment Center and is passionate about helping both patients and their families to recover from the effects of addiction. According to Jonelle, her main goal is to ensure that each and every patient who is seeking treatment receives the help and care that they deserve. Jonelle joined the Banyan Treatment Center team in 2017 as an administrative marketing assistant, and as a result of her exceptional leadership skills and expertise has received numerous promotions which have brought her to her current position. Jonelle studied English at St. John Fisher College, with a minor in Visual & Performing Arts.

Kevin Craner, Ed.D., MHA, CIP, CFRS, CRS

Kevin Craner grew up in Southeastern Pennsylvania. A person in long – term recovery and product of Intervention himself, Kevin began his recovery journey in South Florida. Kevin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, a Master’s Degree in Health Administration, and a Doctorate in Education. Kevin is a certified intervention professional (CIP), certified family recovery specialist (CFRS), and certified recovery specialist (CRS). Over the past several years, Kevin has developed and managed family support and intervention programs. Kevin has worked with thousands of families to help them overcome addiction. His goal is to meet families where they are at, and work towards achieving long – term recovery.

Kahlia Bersson comes to Banyan’s Telehealth Program with extensive experience in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida International University and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Barry University, Kahlia honed her expertise working in both the mental health and substance abuse realms. Kahlia promotes a client-centered, holistic approach to treatment that utilizes relevant and effective interventions to meet the client where they are at in the change process and empower clients to meet and surpass their goals.

Joni Beckham

Joni obtained a bachelor’s degree of science in nursing, a master’s degree of science in nursing focused on nursing leadership, and a master’s in business arts with a focus on healthcare administration. Most recently, Joni earned her Doctorate in Nursing Practice with a focus on Executive Leadership from Abilene Christian University. Her passion is infusing medicine with holistic techniques, such as aromatherapy, which was a large focus of her doctoral research. Joni is looking forward to leading the nursing department at Banyan Treatment Centers with innovative solutions and problem solving. Her nursing philosophy is providing excellent patient care, 100% of the time.

Michael Arcangeletti, LMSW, CADC

Michael Arcangeletti, Executive Director of Clearbrook and Banyan Philadelphia has been working in the field of addiction treatment since 2010. He holds an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Misericordia University, a graduated degree from Marywood University and is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor through the Pennsylvania Certification Board. He has held numerous titles throughout his years in the field, including Residential Tech, Intake Coordinator, Counselor, Clinical Supervisor, and Assistant Clinical Director. Michael joined the Banyan Clearbrook team in November, 2018, and states that his passion for helping others comes from his own personal experience in recovery. He believes that each individual who is struggling with addiction is able to recover, and makes sure that patients know they are cared for, believed in, and worthy of a second chance and a new start.

NORTHEAST REGIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Cara Tilbury, PHD, LCDP, LMSW, CAADC, CCDP-D

Cara was born and raised on a small family farm in Upstate Western NY and relocated to Delaware in 2012 to expand her opportunities to help individuals and families struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. Since Cara joined the team at Banyan Delaware in January of 2021, she has served as the Clinical Director. This has more recently expanded into the Executive Clinical Director role providing oversight and promotion of a safe and healthy recovery environment at our Delaware location. Cara upholds a collaborative patient-centered approach while implementing a strong evidence-based style to her practice and professional management.


Cara has undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Psychology and obtained her master’s degree in Psychology with specialization in Mental Health Applications in 2012. In 2017 she went on to achieve a life goal of her Doctoral Degree in Psychology, specializing in research, training, and treatment of co-occurring severe and persistent mental illness, trauma, and forensic populations. During her graduate and post-graduate career, Cara gained experience working with substance use disorder and personality disorder populations, with a focus on supporting individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Cara is a published doctoral research author in dual-diagnosis and personality disorder treatment. She has since gone on to obtain her Professional Licenses in Chemical Dependency and Social Work, and she also holds certifications in Doctoral Addictions Counseling, Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counseling, Co-occurring Disorders Professional – Diplomat status, and Clinical Certification in Counseling and Forensic Counseling. Cara is a proud member of the Golden Key International High Honor Society, Psi Chi International High Honor Society in Psychology, the American Psychology Law Society, and the American Psychological Association. Having strong clinical understanding combined with her passion to promote health and safety to individuals struggling with substance use, mental health, and trauma, Cara is prepared to humbly serve as the Executive Clinical leader for Banyan Delaware. Her background and education foster a strength-based foundation for addiction and co-occurring treatment encompassing compassion, respect, and dignity for every person.

Sandy Hollier

Sandy has been involved in the field of behavioral healthcare for over twelve years. She holds a degree in Business Management from Lamar University and is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. Sandy has gained valuable experience in a myriad of roles including Executive Director, Director of Admissions and Business Development, Alumni Director, Utilization Review, and Counselor. Sandy holds a remarkable track record for building teams that are harmoniously productive. She embraces holistic practices and believes that any person can recover through proper treatment of mind, body, and spirit. As Executive Director, she matches the spirit of healing with the insight of strategic leadership. Sandy enjoys golfing, hiking, traveling, and is a board member of a non-profit organization benefiting men and women in recovery.

Kirk Gohsman

Kirk was born and raised in rural Michigan and joined the Air Force in 1985. While in the Air Force he was educated and trained as a Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) clinician. He later became an administrator for treatment programs for all levels of care while stationed at David Grant Medical Center in California. Since retiring from the military he has continued to advocate for veterans and others getting into treatment. He is credentialed as a Certified International Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He has held numerous titles including Counselor, Program Manager, Superintendent, Program Director, Regional Director, and Executive Director.

Kirk joined Banyan Heartland in June 2022 and is very enthusiastic about helping others struggling with addiction and now has over 30 years’ experience working in the field. “Recovery starts with Hope”.

Denise Dunn

Denise Dunn is a highly experienced professional in the field of Behavioral Health Care, boasting over 35 years of dedicated service with various nationally recognized leaders in the industry. Her academic qualifications include a Master’s degree in Addiction Studies from Hazelden Graduate School and Bachelor’s degrees in Applied Psychology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, and Recreation from Bemidji State University. Additionally, she holds a degree in Business Administration, showcasing her interdisciplinary approach to her field.

Denise has pursued further education in Clinical Supervision Foundations, as well as obtaining mini-Masters in Project Management and Design, Development, and Evaluation of Training from St. Thomas College. This diverse educational background equips her with a comprehensive skill set for addressing the multifaceted challenges within Behavioral Health Care.

In terms of professional licensure, Denise holds the MN Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor certification and has been Internationally Certified with Reciprocity (IC&RC) as an Advanced LADC since 2019. This certification underscores her commitment to maintaining the highest standards of practice in her field.

Throughout her career, Denise has held various roles, including Regional Executive Director, Project Manager, Regional Vice President, National Director of Clinical Excellence, Therapist, Counselor, Case Manager, Quality & Compliance Specialist, and Clinical Informaticist. This range of experience demonstrates her versatility and depth of knowledge across different aspects of Behavioral Health Care.

Erik Tigard, MBA, CPA

Erik Tigard, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and holder of an MBA (Masters of Business Administration), is the Executive Director of Banyan Palm Springs. He was raised in Cabazon, a town located just west of Palm Springs. Erik obtained a BA in Business from Coe College, his MBA from Jack Welch University, and his Six Sigma certification from Villanova. Additionally, he holds a Data Analytics certificate from Cornell University. Erik has a personal connection to addiction recovery and is incredibly passionate about providing others with the opportunity for change that he received. Having experienced the loss of everything, he never imagined being able to rebuild his life. However, through his hard work and dedication, everything has been restored and even more. In the past, Erik has worked with addiction in conjunction with other fields. For instance, he played a role in establishing the Outpatient Drug Free program at DAP Health (OP program), and has been involved in substance recovery and mental health initiatives at hospitals where he has worked. Banyan Palm Springs is Erik’s first independent substance recovery facility, and his goal is to make a positive impact on as many lives as possible. He strives to feel a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction when he goes to sleep at night, knowing that he has served others.
