Wet Brain Symptoms

Wet Brain Symptoms

What is wet brain? Formally known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, the condition is a type of brain damage. After drinking excessively and continually for a long duration of time, the brain will be manipulated. Vitamin B1 is necessary for the proper functioning of the brain, and the deficiency of thiamine causes wet brain symptoms. Although alcoholism is not the only reason the brain would lack thiamine, it is the leading cause.

Wet Brain From Alcoholism

In the United States, the primary cause of Korsakoff’s psychosis is alcoholism. Due to chronic alcohol abuse, malnutrition, and malabsorption, a serious lack of B-1 (thiamine) is often the result. Therefore, since there is a lack of vitamin B-1, the body is unable to generate energy from nutrients in large amounts. The growth and development of cells in the brain and body begin to decrease.

Absorption is not as easily completed when people suffer from alcohol dependence. The body needs to absorb thiamine by passing through the gastrointestinal tract to be transported to the tissue of the body, and this process becomes complex when large amounts of alcohol are in the body’s system. Additionally, when this happens, thiamine is not being utilized and formulated properly in the brain.

Wet Brain Syndrome Symptoms

Wet brain symptoms are similar to those of being intoxicated or under the influence of alcohol. Overall the condition causes memory and learning impairment. It is important for those facing addiction to receive alcohol addiction treatment to avoid wet brain from alcohol.

Symptoms of wet brain include:

  • Coma
  • Death
  • Frustration
  • Leg tremors
  • Vision changes
  • Changes in mood
  • Severe confusion
  • Balance problems
  • Abnormal eye movements

Other reasons for wet brain may be diabetes, anorexia, pregnancy, or a poor diet. As mentioned, alcohol is the leading cause of brain damage. Signs of wet brain begin appearing after drinking alcohol continually and in large amounts.
