Online Family Therapy at Banyan

Increased healthcare providers are using technology as part of their practice, offering virtual support to their clients. Teletherapy offers expanded access to care to clients and prevents them from falling out of their treatment programs. Virtual services also offer clients convenience, flexibility, and continuous access to our therapists. As part of our telehealth addiction treatment and mental health care, we offer online family therapy that allows clients and their loved ones to receive counseling from the comfort of their homes.

What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy or family counseling services refer to forms of talk therapy that seek to help families improve communication, resolve conflicts, and ultimately rebuild or strengthen their relationships. As a telehealth treatment program that offers addiction and mental health care, we understand the importance of offering support for the individual’s loved ones, as these disorders can impact all parties involved.

Family therapy is led by qualified mental health professionals, such as psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training and experience in family dynamics and group communication. Family therapy is usually a short-term treatment option, with most families accomplishing their goals within 12 sessions or fewer.

Family therapy sessions typically involve relevant or close family members, including spouses, parents, and siblings. However, there is no need to share a bloodline – the client may choose the family with which they wish to participate in therapy.

Banyan family therapists design treatment plans based on the results of clinical assessments, which each client goes through upon admission to our facilities. These treatment plans are based on the family’s unique issues and goals. For instance, while some family counseling sessions may utilize straightforward talk therapy, others might include games or exercises to help break the ice or support recovery.

How Does Online Family Counseling Work?

Also called telemedicine and telehealth, teletherapy refers to therapy or counseling services offered virtually, such as through video chat, instant messaging, or over the phone. Teletherapy is most beneficial to patients who do not live close enough to one of our Banyan rehab locations to consistently attend in-person sessions, are concerned about missing appointments due to a busy schedule, travel for business frequently, are housebound, or experience other issues with transportation.

Telehealth for addiction and mental illness is also an option for couples therapy or family therapy sessions when one or more individuals involved are traveling, do not live in the same area, or have conflicting schedules. Individuals interested in virtual family therapy need a phone, tablet, or computer as well as internet access.

Our telehealth therapy sessions take place 3 to 5 times per week, usually in the afternoon or evenings. Patients are encouraged to meet with therapists online in a quiet and private setting where they will not be interrupted or heard by others. This ensures that they will be comfortable enough to speak openly and honestly with our therapists.

Family members and clients who participate in our family counseling online for addiction and mental health recovery find enormous value in working through their issues with the guidance of a professional. An objective third party often sees the things that the individuals involved do not, helping loved ones and clients identify issues that contribute to their challenges.

Some of the benefits of virtual family counseling for addiction and mental illness include:

  • Development of empathy and compassion
  • Flexibility in scheduling
  • Healthier boundaries
  • Improved behaviors, communication skills, and coping skills
  • Less stress and dysfunction
  • Reduced conflict
  • Reduced need for commuting

Improving relationships with loved ones can also lead to improvements in other areas of functioning. Meaningful and secure relationships enhance a person’s overall sense of well-being, and learning how to love and be loved is a lesson that can be carried with our clients and their families throughout their lives.
