How to Tell Your Coworkers You’re in Recovery

How to Tell Your Coworkers You’re in Recovery

It’s five o’clock on a Friday and the discussions about the post-work happy hour are buzzing around the office.

While you try to politely decline and make up an excuse that you have places to be, the real reason you do not want to go is because you are in recovery and nobody knows. After drug rehab, that secret burden hanging over your head may make you feel anxious and stressed. Do you take a leap of faith and have that dreaded talk to tell your coworkers you’re in recovery? How do you tell your employer about rehab?

Telling Your Coworkers You are In Recovery

At Banyan Pompano, we understand that telling someone you love that you are in recovery can be difficult. It is one thing to tell your family and closest friends, but an entirely different story to tell your boss or coworkers you may barely know. At our addiction rehab in Pompano, we work with people in various stages of recovery and have come across numerous ways of explaining recovery to your coworkers.

First and foremost, if you are not required by law and if you feel uncomfortable, you do not have to tell your coworkers you’re in recovery. When you are in situations where drinking is involved, just remember to politely decline. You can say you don’t drink, you’re not in the mood, or you just don’t want to. Most people will stop asking there, but if they persist just say no thank you and move on.

It is important not to lie about your addiction, especially if you are in a job field where you are required to disclose such matters. Lying or being deceitful could lead to big problems down the road.

If you decide to tell your coworkers you’re in recovery, be candid but do not overshare. They are still your coworkers, so they do not need to know all about your personal life.

Remember, you do not need to tell everyone in the office. It is better to tell those that you are close to or who you work directly with rather than someone who works in another department on a different floor.

Educate your coworkers. They may not understand that addiction is a disease and how difficult it can be to overcome.

Most importantly, have confidence. Do not be ashamed or embarrassed. Addiction is a disease and it is in your past. You should be proud of yourself for taking the steps to recover.

You must do what is best for you. At our faith-based treatment center, we know that everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to discussing their addiction with others. While there may be people who are not as sympathetic as you hoped, you may be surprised just how supportive your coworkers can be.
