Meth in Chicago

The History of Meth in The United States

Like many major American cities, Chicago has seen its fair share of illicit drug use. As law enforcement, government officials, and addiction specialists work to keep up, seizures of a specific substance have highlighted the fact that these issues are still alive and well. Banyan Treatment Center Chicago is looking at the presence of meth in Chicago and why addiction to this substance is so dangerous.

‘Operation Crystal Shield’ Results in Seizure of Record Amount of Meth in Chicago

February 2020 saw the development of Operation Crystal Shield, a nationwide initiative founded by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to combat the growing rates of illegal meth distribution around the US. The operation has led to over 2,100 arrests and the seizure of over $54.5 million, 300 firearms, and 60,000 pounds of meth.1

Looking at Chicago specifically, the rates of methamphetamine seizures have increased exponentially since it began participating in the initiative. In 2020, DEA Chicago seized 1,534 pounds of meth, while the following year saw that number rise to over 1,800. It is worth considering that just one pound of meth is worth upwards of $6,500, making these numbers even more daunting.2

While the seizure of these drugs is a massive win, it highlights the danger remaining for many people in this city. To this day, meth in Chicago remains a problem, and falling victim to an addiction to this drug can spell serious trouble.

Why Is a Meth Addiction So Dangerous?

Meth abuse is an extremely risky behavior that can have detrimental effects on a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. First, it is intensely addictive, meaning that some people can develop full-blown dependencies even after one usage. Once you are addicted to meth, it becomes increasingly more difficult to break away from it. Second, the highs are intense, and the lows are even more so. As euphoric as those peaks may feel, the user will inevitably come crashing down sooner or later.

These come-downs can result in a number of unpleasant symptoms, including:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Intense diarrhea
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Inability to feel pleasure
  • Agitation or irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Mood swings

If you are trying but struggling to break away from an addiction to meth, it is encouraged that you do not attempt to do so alone. The cycle of withdrawals, cravings, and relapse can quickly morph into binges, which can ultimately result in an overdose. Instead, consider pursuing meth addiction treatment, like that found at Banyan’s drug rehab in Chicago.
