Signs of a Meth Lab: Could a Meth House be in Your Neighborhood

Signs of a Meth Lab: Could a Meth House be in Your Neighborhood

At our rehab center in Chicago, we know that a drug or alcohol addiction can happen to anyone.

Take this one step further and you have the people who are producing these drugs. Although you may live in a nice and peaceful neighborhood, it doesn’t mean that your neighbors don’t have their secrets. Also, if you are looking to move, you want to make sure that your new home, where your children will grow up, wasn’t once home to a meth lab.

What Does a Meth Lab Look Like?

A meth lab is a house or structure where methamphetamine is produced illegally. While meth labs can vary drastically in appearance, they do tend to have some similarities.

The production of meth is much more involved than throwing some ingredients together. Because of its complexities, meth labs may look like a makeshift chemistry lab. Meth’s production typically involves equipment like glassware, cookware, funnels, propane tanks, and tubing. Methamphetamine is also made with a variety of ingredients like cold medications, lithium batteries, and other chemicals. Some meth makers will wear protective gear like gloves and masks, so those will likely by present as well.

Telltale Signs of a Meth House

It can be hard to know how to recognize a meth house if you do not know what you are looking for. From the inside, the improvised chem lab is an easy give-away, but from the outside, the signs of a methamphetamine lab are much more subtle.

Some possible signs of a meth lab from the outside include:

  • An unusual and strong meth lab smell, similar to urine
  • Darkened or covered windows
  • Large amounts of trash with meth ingredients or empty chemical containers
  • General unkempt appearance of the house
  • Soiled or unkempt lawn
  • Broken or damaged property
  • Added ventilation systems
  • Strong security practices
  • Paranoid or secretive inhabitants

Not only are the signs of a meth lab unsightly, but methamphetamine production is dangerous. The smell alone can cause problems for some people and there have been cases of meth lab explosions. Meth abuse can also lead to angry and violent behavior. If you suspect there is a meth house in your neighborhood, you may want to report it.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug that can cause serious physical and mental health problems. Often, people who are addicted are in denial about their problems and refuse to get meth addiction treatment until something drastic happens. If you or someone you care about is addicted to meth or another drug, do not wait to ask for help.
