Part of this is due to what experts dub as “generational forgetting” in which the current generation of drug users is simply unaware of the true dangers of cocaine, especially the disco-era dangers that played out in the 1970s.2 Younger generations simply weren’t around to witness the dangers of cocaine use or addiction, and are thus unaware of the dangerous game they’re playing each time they use.
The rise in cocaine use is a danger to communities nationwide, with the drug causing health issues and addictions. Our facility offers Heartland drug and alcohol treatment to treat cocaine addiction in Illinois. If you or someone you love is struggling with cocaine addiction, call 888-280-4763 to learn how we can help.
Increased availability of cocaine and crack cocaine is also believed to be contributing to the rise of cocaine use across the country. Part of this increase in supply comes from record amounts of coca farming in South America.
Farmers in Colombia are growing coca, the base of cocaine, over other crops. The coca crops are combined with other chemicals, like gasoline, to create coca paste. The paste is sold to drug traffickers, who turn it into cocaine. The coca paste sells for more than one ton of corn, so farmers are quick to choose this crop over others due to the higher profit margins.3
