Philadelphia Mobsters Indicted on Drug Charges

The Biggest Drug Busts in History

The mob has been a powerful and heinous entity that has taken on many forms and exists in many subgroups.

All over the globe, these groups are made up of members that are part of the many generations born into these families. The Philadelphia mob is only one of the many that are infamous for their violent and drug-related crimes. For the past decade, the Philadelphia mob was believed to have weakened after its leaders Joseph “Uncle Joe” Ligambi and Joseph “Skinny Joe” Merlino underwent federal prosecutions.1 However, these reports seem to have overlooked the strength of the mob. At the end of November 2020, 15 Philadelphia mobsters were indicted on drug charges.

At Banyan Philadelphia, we’re aware of the dangers of drugs as well as the many drug-related crimes that have contributed to addiction all around the globe. We advise against any experimentation with substances and offer addiction treatment programs for those who have dependencies on drugs or alcohol.

La Cosa Nostra Mobsters Indicted in Philadelphia

After the indictment was opened, prosecutors revealed that the mob had been admitting new members since 2015.These Philly mobsters were indicted on charges of racketeering, extortion, gambling, and drug trafficking charges.1 U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain went on to explain that the 15 members that were apprehended had enough influence on the mafia to push activity into New Jersey. This is the first time in several years that such a big group of mobsters was charged for racketeering. Prosecutors and other personnel that are involved in the case approached it differently by breaking down the mafia’s hierarchy and charging the underboss and soldiers that were instructed by senior members.1

The Philadelphia mobsters indicted on drug charges ran illegal sports gambling, extorted loan-sharks, and distributed drugs like heroin, cocaine, and opioids.1 Since 2015, the mafia slowly grew in number. In the following years, they extorted bookies and loan sharks while expanding their illegal drug efforts. La Cosa Nostra’s members began distributing drugs like heroin, cocaine, and opioids. In several instances, members unknowingly sold these narcotics to undercover federal agents.1

As an addiction treatment center in Philadelphia, we know that heroin, cocaine, and opioids are some of the most commonly abused and trafficked drugs in the world. It’s common for groups like the mob to push these drugs around for profit. Unfortunately, these substances end up in the hands of many everyday people, changing and destroying their lives in the worst ways imaginable. That’s why we offer different treatments for substance abuse and detoxes like our heroin and cocaine detox that helps patients recover from withdrawals and move on to their next phase of treatment. The Philadelphia mobsters indicted on drug charges aren’t the first to receive these charges -- and won’t be the last.
