Oxycodone Addiction Symptoms

Oxycodone Addiction Symptoms

Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid used to treat severe pain.

Some common brand names include OxyContin, Tylox, and Percodan. It is typically prescribed by a doctor, but because of its addictive nature, it is often abused.

It is estimated that between 21% to 29% of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain will misuse them, and 8% to 12% will develop an addiction that often requires prescription pill addiction treatment in order to quit.1 Oxycodone is no exception. Some people misuse this drug to aid in pain while others will abuse it for its euphoric effects, but unfortunately in both cases, the result can be an oxycodone addiction.

Common Oxycodone Drug Abuse Symptoms & Signs of Abuse

Some people may start to become addicted to oxycodone without even realizing it until it is too late. Catch the problem early by learning to recognize the oxycodone addiction symptoms early. Getting  opioid abuse treatment sooner rather than later can help people not only avoid potential health problems but also the dangerous secondary effects of addiction.

The first signs of oxycodone abuse include:

  • Taking more than the recommended dosage
  • Taking medication more frequently than prescribed
  • Needing to take a stronger dose to feel the same effects
  • Filling prescriptions early
  • Trying to forge an oxycodone prescription
  • Always carrying oxycodone pills
  • Turning to oxycodone pills sold on the street instead of a prescription
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when going without
Along with these red flags of oxycodone abuse, addiction symptoms to oxycodone will often start to include noticeable behavioral or physical changes.

If you suspect that someone you care about may be abusing this drug, look for these oxycodone addiction symptoms:
  • Frequent doctors’ appointments without any explanation
  • Secretive or deceptive behavior especially regarding medications
  • Carrying pill bottles everywhere
  • Doctor shopping
  • Spending time with a new crowd
  • Mood swings
  • Lethargy
  • Lying or stealing money to get more pills
  • Hidden pills
  • Financial problems
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting
  • Memory problems
  • Psychosis
If your loved one is exhibiting several of these oxycodone addiction symptoms, get help now. Addiction can be a fast-downward spiral that can result in lasting and irreversible damage. Instead of letting yourself get caught up with oxycodone abuse or watching as a loved one loses control, there is hope.
