Alcohol Isn’t Healthy, Even When It’s Paired with Yoga or Movies

Alcohol Isn’t Healthy, Even When It’s Paired with Yoga or Movies

As more and more people choose sobriety over the dangers of drinking, companies are struggling to reach customers.

While some restaurants are following this healthy sober movement by offering mocktails or alcohol-free drinks, others are struggling to keep selling alcohol. Communities in Illinois have been voting to allow alcohol delivery services and even alcohol sales in movie theaters,1 and this ease of access is worrying for anyone who understands the dangers of alcohol and the long-term effects of alcohol abuse.

It’s not just movie theaters, new wine brands are trying to push alleged health benefits of alcohol. Companies are claiming that their alcohol beverages can improve heart health, help with depression, and even serve as an all-around wellness drink. Some companies are going as far as pairing wine or other alcoholic drinks with yoga classes. They’re citing small concentrations of other ingredients in wine, such as resveratrol, which is claimed to improve heart health. But one study shows that to get this benefit, a person would need to consume over 670 bottles of red wine daily just to get the right levels of resveratrol for the alleged health benefits.2 Safe to say, it’s not worth it, and alcohol is not a wellness drink.

Is Alcohol Dangerous? Are there Any Health Benefits of Alcohol?

Despite what many alcohol companies would like the public to believe, no, alcohol is not safe. It is not a wellness drink, and there aren’t advantages of drinking alcohol. Alcohol consumption, even moderate drinking at levels below alcoholism patterns of consumption, is dangerous. One worldwide study found that even one glass of red wine a day is dangerous, increasing a person’s likelihood of developing alcohol-related health problems or injuries. 3

"The strong association between alcohol consumption and the risk of cancer, injuries, and infectious diseases offset the protective effects for heart disease in our study” said study lead author Dr. Max Griswold.3 Booze companies push the alleged health benefits of alcohol, but this study and many others prove that any miniscule benefit is outweighed by the dangers of alcohol.
