Boston is a wonderful city filled with rich history and fun activities for people of all ages.


It is famous for its clam chowder as well as the distinct accent of those native to the city. While there is plenty to do in Boston, if you are newly sober, you may be used to a different type of fun. Before you went to a partial hospitalization program and got sober, your time may have been filled with parties, clubs, and other risk-filled activities. 


Sober Activities in Boston for Recovery 

Even if you have lived in Boston your entire life, now that you are sober, it may feel like an entirely different city. There is plenty new to explore and a lot of fun, sober things to do in Boston you may have never tried before. Even amid the coronavirus pandemic, so long as you wear a mask and practice social distancing guidelines, you can still enjoy the city. Get Out to the Harbor

Not only is Boston Harbor a great place to take in the view, but there are several sober activities you can do on the water. Companies offer everything from boat tours to whale watching. You could even take a day to do some island hopping. 


Go for a Walk 

In the warmer months, Boston is a great city to go for a walkaround. Follow the Freedom Trail for 2.5 miles and pass by several historic buildings along the way, or go off and explore one of Boston’s picturesque neighborhoods like Beacon Hill. Not only are you sure to see some great sites, but you also can get in some exercise, an important part of your new recovery routine. 


Explore the Universities 

Boston is home to several universities, including Harvard and MIT. Even if you are not a fan of the schools, they’re still quite a sight. Established in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest college in the United States. You can walk the grounds and feel the institution’s hallowed history. 


Plan an Activity 

Many recovering addicts struggle with what to do at night, but there are plenty of sober nighttime activities in Boston that don’t involve putting your sobriety at risk. Not only is seeing the city lit up after dark enjoyable, but you could also go on a ghost tour, do a dinner cruise on the harbor, stargaze at the Coit Observatory, or go axe throwing with some friends. 


Go to A Game 

Boston is known for its many successful sports teams. Whether or not you are a big fan of the team itself, these events can be an experience. If COVID-19 restrictions ruin your plans, you could also make an event of the game at your home or go watch at a restaurant that is following coronavirus guidelines. There are bound to be plenty of other fans anywhere you go in the city. 


Be A Tourist

One of the best sober things to do in Boston is to be a tourist in your hometown. The great thing about getting sober is that it is almost like you get to start over and you likely have a new perspective on life. Take this new view of things and go explore the city. Boston is a popular tourist destination for people around the world, boasting key landmarks of the American Revolution, so take advantage of being there. Spend your weekend visiting all the most popular tourist destinations in Boston, like the Old North Church, the Paul Revere House, Boston Common, and the Boston Public Library. It may even feel like you are seeing some of these places for the first time.
