Gloria’s vision for Banyan is simple: that the needs of our clients are being met. By that, Gloria says she is personally invested in making sure that our clients receive both physical and emotional nourishment. Gloria makes it her personal goal to ensure that all clients have a valuable experience that serves to fortify their self-respect and self-assuredness because she believes everyone deserves to walk with his or her head held high.

Her experience with treatment and recovery comes from the personal experience unique to that of a loved one of an addict. Gloria has traversed the entire treatment and recovery process, which gives her insight into and compassion for what our clients are experiencing.

Eric Oakes has been in the helping professions for over 25 years. He got his start working with children and adolescents in schools and therapeutic communities in New England, and has been drawn toward those battling addiction ever since. Along the way, Eric has worked throughout the Eastern United States. He has treated persons with severe and persistent mental illness, advocating from the community and in their homes. He has worked with persons with developmental disabilities and women with young children as well. Eric has worked in addictions in the South Florida region for 15 years, successfully managing and directing several prominent treatment programs. In both public and privately funded settings, the theme throughout has been a commitment to serving those in need. Eric Oakes is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master in Social Work, is certified by the State of Florida, and has a Master in Business Administration in Health Care Management.

Josh Katz brings Banyan over eleven years of experience working with hundreds of hospitals and treatment centers, where he helped thousands of people find the help they need. He studied Communications at Rider University and Health Care Administration at Palm Beach State College. Prior to Banyan, Josh was instrumental in growing many unique and successful programs for many different needs of treatment throughout the treatment industry. Josh is a staple in the South Florida Recovery Community and has built his reputation nationwide by organizing hundreds of conferences and helping families around the country.

Catherine Manley, LMHC

Catherine Manley is the Executive Director at Banyan Treatment Pompano and Banyan Detox facilities. She earned her Master’s degree at Nova Southeastern University in Mental Health Counseling and is licensed in the State of Florida. Working in the field of substance abuse treatment, Catherine has led staff in multiple roles as Primary Therapist, Detox Supervisor, and Clinical Director. In addition to her experience in human services, Catherine received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Florida International University in 2003. She has a background in marketing, advertising and project management. Catherine brings a great balance of education, compassion, and business acumen to the Banyan family. The driving force behind her ambition is centered on helping individuals struggling with alcoholism and addiction.

Joshua Gamaitoni was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. After his own personal struggles with addiction, Josh relocated to Florida to start his journey through recovery in 2011. Over the past six years, Josh has gained a well-rounded background in a variety of facets in the treatment industry including sober living management, admissions, community outreach and is currently working towards his certification as an interventionist. Joshua joined the Banyan Treatment Center family in 2017 with the title of National Director of Business Development. His goal is to assist those suffering from this disease and their families in any way he can.

Lauren was born and raised on Long Island in New York. She attended community college, as well as business school and majored in Business Administration. Lauren began her career in New York City in 1994 where she worked as a Financial Analyst for two of the largest NY Direct Marketing agencies for over 20 years.

In 2013, Lauren relocated to Wellington, FL and pursued a career in the treatment industry. Since 2015, Lauren has been the Director of Finance at Banyan Treatment. Lauren works with the clients and their families to help create affordable payment plans for treatment. She assists with cash or self pay clients and helps families navigate through the financial process to ensure they understand their payment options and what is best depending on their situation.

Executive Director

David Tews, Ed.D., LCPC, CADC has been in the helping profession for over 20 years. He has worked in a variety of settings specializing in the treatment of substance abuse disorders. Dr. Tews got his start as a volunteer at a community center in Sarasota, Florida providing pre- and post-test services for individuals interested in HIV testing. While working on his addictions certification and master’s degree he worked in halfway houses, recovery homes, treatment centers, and clinics. He has also taught addictions and other mental health courses at local colleges and universities. Dr. Tews serves on the Illinois Advisory Council on Alcohol and other Drugs while advocating for those in need of substance abuse treatment.

James Cunnar, M.D.

James Cunnar M.D. did his undergraduate training at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Illinois in 1990. He completed his medical education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1994. His residency training was performed at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Indiana, after which he became board certified in Family Practice in 1997. Dr. Cunnar’s clinical interests include adolescent care, adult wellness, and diabetes. Dr. Cunnar is actively involved within the greater community of family physicians on both the national and state level. Dr. Cunnar resides in Aurora.

Dr. Cunnar is brings an enthusiastic approach to the collaborative model of treatment Banyan champions.

Cheryl specializes in and has been working in the field of substance abuse and mental health disorders since 1993, earning her CADC from College of DuPage in 1996. Cheryl’s earned her Masters of Science in Human Services Counseling from National Louis University. She is trained and certified in Sex Addiction Therapy (CSAT) by Dr. Patrick Carnes from the International Institute for Trauma and Addictions Professionals (IITAP). Cheryl came to Banyan after working 5 years as Clinical Supervisor. Prior experience includes hospital settings, Intake and Emergency Department, Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment Centers, Halfway House and 3/4-way house coordinator, and in private practice for 7 years.

Cheryl believes the basis for health and wellness is rooted in relationships. She is inspired by those who courageously share their stories individually, with their families or in a recovery group setting. Her goal is to hold space and develop a warm, safe, therapeutic relationship built on trust, congruence and compassion for those she is honored to serve.

Taylor is licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. She earned her Masters of Arts (M.A.) in Forensic Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL. She earned her Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology and Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.

Taylor has a wealth of experience in a variety of clinical settings, which includes counselor in an inpatient and outpatient programs at Linden Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, mental health professional at Kane County Adult Correctional Center, and crisis counselor at Swedish Covenant Hospital. She has experience working with both adolescents and adults on a group and individual basis. Taylor has had the opportunity to work with an array of clinical presentation, which includes eating disorder, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar, and PTSD.

Taylor believes that treatment should be a collaboration between patient and counselor, which allows her to work closely with her patients in developing a healthier level of functioning.

Jessica got her start in the field volunteering as an advocate and working with several foundations in the Midwest for drug addiction for the past 8 years. She has been a public speaker on public forums, schools, jails, and treatments centers throughout Illinois. Additionally, she has been running a small-scale sober home for the last 5 years.

Jessica first came to Banyan Treatment Center in May of 2016 as an Admissions Coordinator. After showing her dedication and strong work ethic, Jessica was given the opportunity to take training courses in Recovery Coaching. Jessica was recently promoted to Chicago’s Intake Supervisor, which allows her to fulfill her passion by helping individuals and families who suffer from drug addiction through the admissions process.

Vanessa has had a long standing passion for the study of addiction and addiction treatment, stemming from her days at the University of Missouri, Columbia where she earned her Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology. During her senior year, she completed an internship at a residential addiction treatment center for men, while simultaneously assisting with a research study on alcohol use behaviors among sexual minority women. Vanessa completed her own research study entitled, “Drug-use Behaviors among Sexual Minority Women: Vulnerabilities associated with Negative Mood and Cognitions and Protective Effects Afforded by Internalized Homophobia”. She presented these findings at Psychology Day in May 2012.

Vanessa went on to earn her Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Counseling at DePaul University in 2015. During this time, Vanessa completed her graduate student internship at an outpatient treatment center for adults and adolescents with substance use disorders. Concurrent with her clinical internship, Vanessa gained experience working with the eating disorder population within a residential treatment setting.

Presently, Vanessa is licensed as a Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. She recently became a published author who assisted in writing a chapter within the Handbook of Strengths-Based Clinical Practices edited by Jeffrey K. Edwards, Andy Young,

Kent is licensed as a Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and is certified as an ADOC counselor (CADC) both in the state of Illinois. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology from Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston, IL.

Kent has experience in a variety of clinical recovery treatment settings, including Senior counselor at Interventions for adolescents where he also helped set up the first state funded Recovery home for adolescent males in the state of Illinois. Kent also was Clinical Supervisor of three half-way houses for males, women, and a MISA (Mentally Ill Substance Abuse) houses in Aurora for Community Counseling Center of Fox Valley and Gateway Foundation. He has worked as Senior counselor for Presence Behavioral Health Outpatient programs in Evanston, Ill. and Lake Bluff, Ill. Kent has recently worked Ben Gordon Community Counseling in DeKalb, Ill. Kent also oversees mental health services in DeKalb County jail.

Kent believes that successful recovery is a collaboration between patient and therapist. A collaboration that works best with trust and respect for each other.

Bonnie has been working in the addiction and mental health field for the past 5 years since graduating with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Aurora University. Shortly after, she earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lewis University with a specialization in the treatment of substance abuse. Currently, Bonnie is LPC and CADC eligible in the state of Illinois.

Bonnie has a professional history of counseling patients coping with mental health and substance use disorders in diverse clinical settings. Bonnie began her career in residential level of care at Timberline Knolls working with girls and women struggling with mood disorders, addiction, and eating disorders. Prior to becoming a primary therapist at Banyan Treatment Center, she worked as a mental health counselor at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital’s inpatient psychiatric unit as well as a crisis counselor in the intake and emergency department. Bonnie has experience working with adults in many capacities including individual, group, and family therapy.

Bonnie is passionate about advocating for each patient’s needs and providing a collaborative therapeutic relationship. She believes important components of treatment involve building positive coping skills, community integration, and healthy family dynamics.

Heidi was born and raised in the Chicago area and recently started with us in the nurse practitioner role. She graduated with her Masters of Science degree in nursing from the nurse practitioner program at Lewis University in 2015. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner she worked in a variety of nursing fields including medical-surgical, home health, hospice, case management and behavioral health nursing.

Prior to coming to Banyan Treatment Center, Heidi worked as a nurse practitioner in a long-term care behavioral health facility where she cared for many dual diagnosis patients. Heidi performs medical and mental health assessments and treats immediate problems that arise with patients while in treatment. Heidi has always been interested in the sciences and in helping people.

Kahlia Bersson comes to Banyan Boca’s Detox and Residential Program with extensive experience in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Florida International University and her Master’s degree in Social Work from Barry University, Kahlia honed her expertise working in both the mental health and substance abuse realms. Kahlia promotes a client-centered, holistic approach to treatment that utilizes relevant and effective interventions to meet the client where they are at in the change process and empower clients to meet and surpass their goals.

Drew Gray was born and raised in Pennsylvania, he relocated to Florida in 2013. He originally joined the team at Banyan Stuart Detox as a Case Manager and has been promoted to Director of Operations at Banyan Boca’s Detox and Residential. He can empathize with the impact that addiction has on a family because when Drew was seven years old, his father lost his battle to addiction by overdosing. Prior to his time with Banyan, he worked as a school teacher for three years. During his teaching days, he always had a passion to help individuals struggling with addiction. Drew earned his BS in Human Services: Generalist. He has made a commitment to help people suffering from the disease of addiction because he never wants a child to have to grow up the way he did. Drew aspires to achieve his Ph.D. in Psychology and plans to start his graduate program within the next year.

Rob Cole, LMHC, RD/LDN, MCAP, QS joined Banyan Treatment Center in October 2017 as the clinical director of mental health services. As a native Floridian, Rob graduated in 1987 from Florida International University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and Nutrition. After an extended dietetic internship, he passed his Registered Dietitian (RD) certification, became licensed (LDN) in Florida, and after working 10 years in the long-term care industry decided to change his focus to the field of addiction recovery .

With some personal experience in addiction and recovery, a personal "calling" to the field of counseling and a desire to give back to the community, Rob decided to add to his skill set and sought a Master's Degree in Counseling. In 2000, he began working in treatment and graduated from Trinity University (Miami) and after his two-year supervision period, became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). He continued to practice in mental health and substance abuse treatment. In 2012, Rob started a 22-bed Mental Health PHP facility in Broward County which continues to flourish today. Lisa Molyneaux, LCSW, ACSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with more than 20 years of experience working with troubled youth. She has specialized in dealing with family issues, substance abuse, as well as physical, sexual and emotional abuse. She has been a Clinical Supervisor for over 10 years and also worked in a private practice. She has received praise for high standards and ethical practices when working with her clients. Ms. Molyneaux received her Bachelor of Social Work from Florida State University and furthered her education at Case Western Reserve University, where she received her Masters of Social Service Administration.

Danielle Menendez is a native of Miami and has lived in Port Saint Lucie, FL since 1997. Danielle experienced a significant loss at the young age of eight. When Danielle experienced this loss, she knew she wanted to do more. By high-school she was in Hosa (Health Occupations Students of America) program. While in the program, she worked her way into an elective course for patient care technician. From there, she moved forward earning several degrees leading her to a career path of working with individuals who have been dually diagnosed. From CNA to LPN to RN, Danielle has chosen this path all from something that happened when she was young.

She continues to strive and exceed expectations in hopes that if she can help just one person; she has done her job. Finally, Danielle has aspirations of becoming a Nurse Practitioner.

Kevin Shaffer is a former heroin and cocaine addict from Ft. Pierce Florida. When Kevin was 18 years old he lost his father in a car accident in which drugs and alcohol were involved. Kevin spent most of his 20’s in and out of multiple institutions while battling his own addiction. At the age of 28 after sleeping on the streets for 2 nights Kevin checked himself into a local detox and moved on from there into a local halfway house with nothing. He used this time to become grounded in his recovery and build an amazing support group. He spent the first year working as a day laborer and at Denny’s. After saving enough money for his driver’s license and a vehicle Kevin had an overwhelming appetite to give back to other addicts the same way that others had given back to him. He started working in the substance abuse field as a Behavioral Health Tech and was promoted to a supervisor after 90 days in the field. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida International University and two masters degrees in psychological counseling from Columbia University, Alexia became a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida. Throughout her career, Alexia has worked with a diverse population, treating individuals suffering from addiction, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, trauma, and stage of life issues. Alexia has worked at some of South Florida’s most respected drug & alcohol treatment centers and has acquired a breadth of knowledge and experience working alongside leaders in the substance abuse community. Alexia marries client-centered interventions, empowerment counseling, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to provide her clients with a well-rounded and comprehensive treatment approach.

Originally from New Jersey, Alyssa relocated to South Florida in 2011 after experiencing her own struggles with addiction. Alyssa began working in the treatment field in 2012 and gained a wealth of knowledge in the recovery industry and digital marketing. She was a 2016 graduate from Palm Beach State College and has completed the Salesforce University for admins and developers. Alyssa joined the Banyan Team in 2016, bringing her five plus years of experience. She has moved her way up at Banyan by transitioning her role from Quality Control Operator to the title she holds today which is Director of PR & Communications.

Anthony is an Ordained Minister (Non-Denominational) and published Christian Author, his Ministry experience includes Chaplain Community Liaison, Director of Ministries,Director of Community Outreach, and Biblical Counselor, He has a heart for those who suffer with mental illness, addictions and the broken in spirit. He has ministered to over 6,500 individuals suffering with addictions, mental health issues, the homeless, youths and inmates. He has been interviewed on numerous Faith & Recovery radio and internet shows. Anthony has successfully completed specialized training with the International Conference of Police Chaplains (ICPC) and The Ministry Training Institute. He is the Director of the Faith-Net Programs with the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI).

In 2014, the National Association of Social Workers, Broward County awarded Anthony it's Public Citizen of the Year. In 2015, the National Alliance of Mental Illness, Broward Country awarded Anthony it's volunteer Recognition Award.

Corey was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. After struggling with his own demons of addiction, he decided to make a change and come to South Florida for recovery and flourished into the man he was meant to be. Corey joined the Banyan Team in 2014 starting as Banyan’s original Director of Alumni Services and quickly moved his way up within the company from Outreach Coordinator, to today holding the title of Director of Business Development. Corey plays a key role in our South Florida presence, but also travels nationwide to establish working relationships for Banyan Treatment Center and to let the nation know Banyan’s Mission.

Dannielle was born and raised in New Jersey. She attended Montclair State University and majored in Family Services. Danielle’s career in the addiction treatment industry started at a women’s sober living facility before she joined the Banyan Family in July of 2015. During her time at Banyan, she has worked her way up in the company starting as an Intake Coordinator, moving to the Director of Intake, now holding her current role as Director of Admissions.

She loves being a part of giving clients the chance to get sober, be happy, and be successful. Her favorite part of her efforts however, is speaking to parents and supporting them through the process of getting their loved one the help they need. Her goal as Director of Admissions is to make the admission process as stress-free as possible, while yielding support. She recognizes what a huge decision this is for the whole family unit. She wants people to feel proud and secure in their decision with choosing Banyan to help their family combat the disease of addiction.

David picked up the tools found in the 12 step fellowship and immediately dove head first into the recovery available here in South Florida, where he worked diligently with his sponsor and completed the 12 steps while obtaining employment.

David first came to Banyan Treatment Center as a Behavioral Health Technician. After showing his dedication and firm work ethic, David was given the opportunity to take some training courses and becomes Banyan’s first Recovery Coach. After excelling in coaching, David was then promoted again to Director of Alumni Services. As the Director of Alumni Services, David reaches out to clients and keeps in contact while bringing them back for weekly alumni meetings and monthly alumni events.

Josh McPherson was born and raised in Frankfort, Kentucky. His own personal struggle with alcohol and drugs relocated him to South Florida in 2013. His new purpose after getting sober was geared entirely around helping others. Josh started with Banyan in October 2014 as a Behavioral Health Technician. He has been blessed to grow within the company as the company grew itself. His growth landed him with his current title of Director of Operations for the Pompano Beach PHP and IOP levels of care. One of his favorite parts about Banyan is that he is involved in training when facilities open out of state. He loves being a part of the new growth and goals. Josh is honored to be a part of the Banyan Family and eager to see where this journey continues to take him.

Mary Lee has worked in the medical industry in Clinical, Operations and Compliance Management with her Degree in Nursing for over 30 years. Substance Abuse is very personal for her as many close family members have suffered with addiction. Her passion is to evaluate and assess the process of improving the delivery of services to safely help clients recover. Throughout her career she has worked in PA, NJ, CA and FL. Currently in her role as QA/PI Director for Banyan she has been instrumental in expanding levels of care to Residential Detox, Intensive Inpatient, and Residential Level 1 clients.

Born and raised in New York, Michele hails from a large family of 11 siblings. After graduating high school, she earned a Bachelor Degree in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pursuing a teaching career, Michele worked for several years with under-privileged children in the Bronx, NY. It wasn’t long before her spark for business became apparent, and she was called into a very successful family business, who’s distribution spanned into several states. Meeting her husband of 40 years, during a family trip to Italy, she is now the proud mother of 4 children and 5 grandchildren.

Fleeing the cold New York winters, Michele and her family moved to Florida in 1999. Never one to be idle, she applied to the Palm Beach County School District and was hired to teach at the Palm Beach Marine Institute, a school for young offenders. Moving to Broward County, searching for a position utilizing both her compassion for others and her sharp business acumen and administrative skills, has landed Michele at Banyan Treatment Center and Recovery, where she currently holds the title of Director of Human Resources.

Richard Mayora is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has taught at The Institute for Addiction Studies and The Academy for Addiction Professionals. He has chaired Broward’s Recovery Month event several times and will act in this capacity for 2017. Richard has been in private practice, served as the Clinical Coordinator at Community Healthcare/CenterOne, and was a clinician at Broward Health Medical Center’s psychiatric unit for many years. In 2014, Florida Atlantic University named him Supervisor of Year and mentoring students is his greatest passion.

Ryan Steinberg MS works as the PHP Clinical Supervisor at Banyan Treatment Center, specializing in solution focused therapy, client-centered therapy, as well as disease concept and education about the Twelve Steps. Ryan has worked extensively with adult and adolescent client populations in Inpatient, Residential and Partial Hospitalization settings. He combines his clinical experience with his personal experience in recovery to provide the most effective treatment to his clients. Ryan is also an advocate for the LGBTQ community and he has received advanced clinical training in sexuality/gender related issues. A South Florida native, he received his Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University.

Sue Shoemaker was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has a passion for addiction recovery and has worked in the treatment industry for over five years. Her goals of working in recovery are to maintain relationships in the community, and being a resource and educational asset to assist those struggling with substance abuse. Sue works as a community liaison and bridges the gap between the client and care. She also works with many non-profit organizations that assist in providing Narcan to first responders in her local community. Sue is excited to be part of the Banyan Treatment Center team as our Director of Community Outreach in Pennsylvania.

Marla Sriskand graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2002 with her Masters of Social Work degree. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who proudly utilizes her clinical skills to promote change and save lives. Before working at Banyan Treatment Center, Marla worked with children and families in school-based programs for over 10 years. She has been a Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) since 2014 and specializes in addiction counseling. Last year, Marla began another lifelong mission, which was to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and to promote counseling in her country of origin, Sri Lanka. Marla also enjoys sharing motivational stories with her coworkers, in order to help them continue to feel empowered in their work and maintain workplace morale.
