Telehealth for Addiction at Banyan StuartThe need for virtual addiction treatment has become more apparent during the coronavirus pandemic. Substance use disorders thrive on the loneliness, anxiety, and isolation that people experience during quarantine. When in recovery, isolation and anxiety can halt addiction recovery and increase the likelihood of relapse. Although our Stuart rehab and other facilities are offering in-person treatment, we’ve also incorporated telehealth for addiction to allow patients to continue their treatment programs while feeling safe at home.
Defining TelehealthTelehealth is an umbrella term that refers to both the clinical and non-clinical use of technology, such as online appointment scheduling and video chat. Since we now live in a predominantly virtual world, there are so many ways to utilize technology in medicine to benefit both patients and healthcare providers. When it comes to telehealth for substance abuse, our patients are able to connect to their therapists and treatment providers online via video chat. They may also communicate through text or email. Online scheduling is also offered through our telehealth program, taking the tediousness and frustration out of setting up appointments.
Benefits of Telehealth for Substance AbuseTelehealth rehabilitation for addiction treatment couldn’t have come at a better time. Our online treatment programs remove the need for transportation and commuting, and they prevent treatment from getting in the way of patients’ other obligations. One of the most prominent benefits of our telemedicine for addiction is no commuting. Patients who live far or can’t commute for other reasons will now have the opportunity to complete their programs in the comfort and safety of their homes. Our program is also flexible, allowing patients to set up a schedule with therapists that works around their families and careers.
Additionally, our telehealth services also grant patients another level of privacy to give them peace of mind. Some patients want to keep their recovery as private as possible. Although patient privacy is honored and upheld at our facility, offering patients the opportunity to undergo therapy and treatment in the privacy of their own homes or in group sessions that are limited to a certain number of participants can help. This detail is a special encouragement to our current patients and those who are thinking of joining our residential treatment program.
Another major benefit of our telehealth for addiction is relapse prevention. As previously mentioned, isolation, loneliness, and lack of access to care increases a person’s risk of relapsing tremendously. This has been made clearer during COVID-19. Oftentimes, patients will lose track of their progress, give in to temptation, and revert to old habits because they don’t have our team to keep them accountable. We wanted to change that by offering online addiction treatment that gives them access to our care no matter where they are and by allowing them to communicate with their treatment providers at any time.
How Our Telehealth for Addiction WorksOur telehealth or telemedicine treatment for substance abuse includes three hours of individual therapy three times a week. Patients and therapists will also meet virtually one hour per week to discuss the patients’ progress, struggles, and achievements. In order for patients to communicate with therapists online, they must download a free app called Zoom. Patients can use their smartphones, tablets, laptops, or computers to download Zoom and communicate with therapists as long as they have a camera and audio access.
Moreover, when patients are participating in online therapy sessions with their therapists, they must be alone and away from others. These are private sessions that are designed to help the patient and keep them concentrated on their recovery. No one else should be able to listen in on or participate in any of these discussions.
The benefits of telehealth don’t end there. Our telehealth services also include faith-based therapy sessions. Our Faith in Recovery (FIR) groups provide patients with practical recovery insights, relapse prevention strategies, and a faith-based perspective on recovery. During Faith in Recovery groups, patients can expect to gain a better understanding of our faith-based principles and how to apply them to their recovery and day-to-day responsibilities. We also desire our patients to establish or restore their relationships with God, as well as develop a deeper understanding of His purpose for their lives.
Our Chaplain will also focus on areas such as forgiveness, relapse prevention, gratitude, patience, guilt, shame, self-control, and other challenges that commonly occur in addiction recovery. And while our FIR groups are Christian-based, individuals of all faith backgrounds are welcome to join us.
