Signs You’ve Hit Rock Bottom from Addiction

Addiction is when someone crosses the line from casual drug or alcohol use to dependence.

Although filled with warning signs, the journey to this point may happen without you even recognizing it. Before many people realize it, they are at rock bottom with nowhere to go but up.

What Is Rock Bottom in Addiction?

Rock bottom is a point in someone’s life where they feel that they are at their lowest. It varies from person to person and can range from mild to more concerning problems. Rock bottom from addiction may mean a dramatic drop in overall quality of life for some while for others it could mean some more mild negative consequences of addiction. For many people abusing drugs and alcohol, rock bottom is an eye-opening event or occurrence that finally convinces them that they have a problem and need to get professional help at a facility such as a drug treatment center.

Signs of Hitting Rock Bottom

Although rock bottom from substance abuse is different for everyone, many people cite certain life events more frequently than others that helped them finally see that they had a problem.

  • Being fired because of substance abuse
  • Getting kicked out of your house or becoming homeless
  • Serious financial problems

  • Dropping out or getting kicked out of school
  • Serious injury or hospitalization from drug or alcohol use
  • DWI
