Is Inpatient or Outpatient Care Best for Me?

Inpatient treatment has been the standard of care for addiction treatment in Massachusetts.

But today, many patients are considering the option of intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for drug and alcohol treatment. When learning about inpatient and outpatient treatment, it is important to consider various factors to determine which approach is most effective for your treatment needs. At Banyan Treatment Center Massachusetts, we provide both inpatient and intensive outpatient programs in Massachusetts for treatment, and our treatment experts can help determine the best path for your recovery. There are several factors we consider when choosing between inpatient or IOP care.

Patient Physical and Mental Health

In the initial stages of recovery, many patients are in delicate situations with both their mental and physical health. When the patient is not fully stable in these fields, it can be very risky to immediately admit to IOP treatment. Instead, the patient may continue down a path of inpatient or PHP care until they have reached more stable levels of physical and mental health. Typically, patients complete a degree of inpatient care before continuing down the next step in our continuum of care to IOP treatment.

Support Systems

At-home support is another factor we consider when helping our patients determine which level of care is best suite4d for them. Studies show that patients with poor social support systems at home will do better with inpatient care, while patients with strong social support systems will benefit well from IOP treatment. If a patient cannot find support at home, at a halfway house, or wherever else they reside while receiving IOP treatment, then the patient may better benefit from inpatient care.

Duration of Treatment

For many of our patients, our intensive outpatient program in Massachusetts is a step along or continuum of care to recovery. This means that many patients will receive both inpatient and intensive outpatient treatment plans throughout their recovery. In most cases, IOP treatment follows inpatient care.

Some factors such as financial needs, workplace responsibilities, or family needs may result in a patient entering IOP right from detox, but this varies patient by patient. Call us today at 888-280-4763 to learn more.
