Find Support

Whether you choose to get together with friends you trust, or you attend a formal sobriety meeting, it is important to surround yourself with the right people. Many organizations will hold events on those popular drinking and party holidays, so you know you have a safe place to go. If you don’t think a formal event is necessary, spend time with people who you know will not be a bad influence.

Throw a Sober New Year’s Eve Party

If you recently finished an alcoholism treatment program, you probably know plenty of other people who are trying to stay sober this New Year’s as well. Your party could be a welcome invitation for them. While the party doesn’t have to be completely dry, you can tell people that you will not be providing alcohol and that drinking won’t be a big factor. Instead, focus on activities like Minute to Win It Games or a theme like a murder mystery.

Take a Trip

Especially if you live near a big party scene and are in early recovery, getting away could be the answer. Rather than sitting at home and being worried about what you could be missing out on, a trip will make you forget what your friends are up to. Go skiing and celebrate the New Year in the serenity of snow. Go home and spend it with family you don’t typically get to see. Head to a foreign country and immerse yourself in their culture. There are plenty of options.

Focus On New Year’s Day

While many people will be waking up the next morning with a wicked hangover or nasty side effects from their drug use the night before, you will not have that problem. Celebrate your sobriety and the New Year with a fun activity. This could be everything from skydiving to a good hike.

Find Local Events

There are plenty of sober New Year’s Eve events that you can attend, they just might be a little more difficult to find. Look for events that are described as family or kid friendly to find activities that are not focused on drinking. Almost every town has some kind of fireworks display. You can even talk to other people from your treatment program to see what they are up to.
