Depending on whether or not your active addiction resulted in a criminal record, there are different types of jobs you’ll be able to apply for after completing treatment. Even if you have a record, there are programs to help addicts find jobs, and these programs can connect you with opportunities for work. Here are some tips on finding your first job in recovery:
- Focus on your bright future when discussing your work experience
- Join an alumni program for support, tips, and even job references
- Look for new accreditations or certifications to refresh your education
- Start small, you don’t have to aim for CEO right after rehab
- Choose a different career path from before, one that supports your sobriety
How to Explain Gaps on Your Resume
When you’re part of an inpatient program for drug and alcohol treatment in Massachusetts, there may be a gap in your resume during the time you were in treatment. In many instances, employers won’t ask about this gap. But if they do, there are a few options you can use to explain the treatment-related gap in your resume:
- If you feel it will go over well, be honest about your recovery
- Attribute the absence to a family emergency
- Explain the absence through other work, such as freelancing, but you need the work to back this up
Getting a job after recovery is not impossible. There are many programs that help addicts find jobs, and our alumni program can connect you with other newly sober people who have found jobs post-treatment.
