What is Delta-8? The drug is a fairly new product, but it is already in high demand. Delta-8 THC products have not been thoroughly tested or evaluated by the FDA. Therefore, the substance is not technically approved. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis, and delta-8 is mainly manufactured from the hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) and manipulated to become delta-8. As of 2022, the FDA has received over one hundred reports of unpleasant delta-8 side effects. Hallucinations, high anxiety, confusion, vomiting, and a loss of consciousness were all reported.1

How Is Delta-8 Made?

Delta-8 is a non-synthetic cannabinoid, naturally occurring in the cannabis plant but more regularly produced in a laboratory. Since marijuana is not legal everywhere or only allowed if a person purchases the plant with a medical card, the system is worked by using hemp. Hemp plants are federally legal, and from using a conversion process, delta-8 is manufactured through CBD or the cousin plant to marijuana.

The drug is growing in popularity, although delta-8 side effects are concerning. To make the substance, manufacturers will dissolve CBD into a solvent, which is usually heptane. The solution is then mixed with acid and stirred for around 18 hours. The combination is repeatedly tested until a correct method is selected. Next, washing and neutralizing the solution is very important, and the end product is tested in the lab to confirm the level of purity.

How Safe Is Delta-8?

National poison control centers received 2,362 exposure cases of delta-8 THC products between January 1, 2021, and February 28, 2022. According to the data, 70% required health care facility evaluation, 40% involved unintentional exposure to delta-8 THC, and in one pediatric case, the child died.1

Delta-8 health risks are alarming as the substance has psychoactive and intoxicating effects. Before mentioning the delta-8 THC dangers, there are a few positive side effects. Notably, delta-8 helps soothe an upset stomach and stimulates proper digestion. The drug can uplift mood and support a calm state of mind while improving sleep patterns. However, some of the adverse side effects of delta-8 include:

  • Paranoia
  • Dry mouth
  • Aggression
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Mental depression
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pounding in the ears
  • Slowed reaction times
  • Troubled breathing at rest
  • Swelling of the fingers, hands, feet, or lower legs

Side effects of delta-8 stem from the potentially harmful chemicals ingested, and some manufacturers do not test the product enough before it is sold on the market. Addiction to the substance is possible and likely due to the calming sensations it grants. It is essential for individuals to be aware of how they feel when first taking the drug, and they should refrain from excessive use.
