Common Withdrawal Symptoms

When an addict or alcoholic stops using the substances they’ve become addicted to, withdrawals can happen.

Many addicts fear drug withdrawals, but withdrawals can and do happen as a part of detox. With medically monitored detox in Gilman, patients can safely detox without many of the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms associated with detoxification. We identify common symptoms of withdrawal and how they can be treated.

Drug Withdrawal Symptoms

Everyone’s experiences with drug withdrawal symptoms will vary depending on factors such as age, types of drugs used, duration of use, and overall health. Common drug withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Nausea
  • Lethargy
  • Restlessness
  • Sweating
  • Chills
  • Runny Nose
  • Weakness
  • Muscle Aches

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

Alcohol withdrawals are especially dangerous, with alcohol withdrawal symptoms ranging from discomfort to life-threatening. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Shaking or Tremors
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Delirium Tremens
  • Hallucinations
  • Rapid Heartbeat
  • Stroke

Treating Withdrawals with Medical Detox

Many of the withdrawal symptoms are similar to signs of drug overdose, which is why it’s crucial to detox with the guidance of medical professionals. Withdrawals can vary from mild discomfort to a medical emergency, and having medical support on hand can make the process far safer for patients.

What Happens After Detox

Following successful detoxification, patients will begin their next stage of treatment. Typically this is either a partial hospitalization program or inpatient program. We offer both options at Banyan Heartland. Each treatment path is designed to help patients develop the skills they need to establish and maintain long-term sobriety. Following inpatient treatment, patients progress to the following steps of care, including IOP or OP programs followed by alumni care.

For guidance on combating withdrawal symptoms, reach out to our treatment team at Banyan Heartland. We can assist with all levels of care, from detox to alumni support and beyond. Withdrawals can be a difficult component of recovery, but they can be safely managed with medical support during the detoxification process.
