Can CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

The claims about CBD’s healing properties aren’t all founded in solid science and it appears that CBD’s alleged safety on drug tests is in question too.

Can CBD show up on a drug test? An Illinois woman is speaking up after she was fired for using CBD that created a false positive for THC on a drug test.

Can You Take CBD and Pass a Drug Test?

While many companies selling this chemical may want you to believe that you won’t test positive for THC after taking CBD, it’s not necessarily true. Yes, you can take CBD and still fail a drug test. The type of CBD, aka cannabidiol, that is legal for regular consumption contains less than 0.3% THC,1 but that may be enough to create a positive for THC in some drug tests.

That’s what happened to one Illinois woman who lost her job in a routine drug screening. She said that the CBD capsules she was taking to relieve back pain left trace amounts of THC in her system, causing her to fail her drug test and lose her job.2

The compounds in hemp oil, CBD, and THC are fat soluble, meaning they can be traced in the body for weeks or even months after ingestion. The more a person uses, the higher their concentration will be. So, while less than 0.3% seems small, that number grows as CBD use continues.

Sobriety Is the Best Way to Pass a Drug Test

The only foolproof way to pass a drug test is to get and stay sober. As states pass their own laws of recreational drug use, employers may still have their own regulations that limit drug use. Many people ingest CBD through vaping, but the long-term effects of vaping show how dangerous that can be.

If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, our team at Banyan Treatment Centers Heartland can help. We offer drug detox programs in Gilman and residential drug treatment at Heartland to help patients get and stay sober.
