The Benefits of Motivational Interviewing
Making life-changing decisions can always be a challenge for someone, and this is especially true when it comes to getting sober. Often, the bigger picture of your goals can look overwhelming. Motivational interviewing is a therapy technique which helps make goals more attainable. At Banyan Treatment Center Pompano, we offer motivational interviewing and many other therapies at our substance abuse treatment center in Pompano.
What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is a one-on-one approach to therapy which is commonly used for drug addiction treatment. In motivational interviewing, a therapist speaks with a client directly to assess their goals. The therapist asks questions about your reasons for wanting to make changes, and about how you will work towards those changes. Motivational interviewing helps to take a big goal, like getting sober, and break it down into easier segments.
With motivational interviewing, much of the therapeutic approach is self-directed. Your therapist will have you express your commitment to making a change. Saying that you are committed to getting sober out loud helps make the goal more real, and more attainable. Motivational interviewing is one of our many therapy approaches offered through our stabilization program for addiction.

What Is a Motivational Interview Like?
The goal of motivational interviewing is to help patients develop or discover their own intrinsic motivations and plans for getting and staying sober. The strong patient-therapist connection is key to experiencing motivational interviewing benefits, without this trust between patient and therapist, this therapy process cannot bring results for patients.
At our facility, motivational interviewing is used for patients who need help developing the drive to get sober. It motivates patients to build their own recovery path by helping them tap into their potential for recovery. This counseling style focuses on helping patients break through ambivalence towards recovery and develop a passion for their sobriety.
There are motivational interviewing strengths and weaknesses to consider when working with this approach to drug addiction treatment counseling. If the patient is unwilling to participate in motivational interviews, the motivational therapy will be entirely ineffective. If the therapist or clinician is too aggressive or direct in their approach to motivational interviewing, the patient may shut down and become unresponsive to this therapy. The key is to find the right therapist for motivational interviewing, such as a member of our Banyan Treatment Center Pompano Beach team.
