ASAM stands for the American Society of Addictive Medicine. This professional society represents over 6,600 physicians, clinicians, and associated professionals in the field of addiction medicine. Founded in 1954, ASAM is dedicated to increasing access and improving the quality of addiction treatment, educating physicians and the public, supporting research and prevention, and promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients struggling with alcohol and substance abuse. The ASAM Criteria structures multidimensional assessment around the six dimensions to provide a common language of holistic and biopsychosocial assessment across addiction treatment. This also includes physical health and mental health treatment services, which address the spiritual issues relevant to recovery.

Why is ASAM certification important to patients and their loved ones?
Banyan Treatment Center’s ASAM Levels of Care certification seal gives a sense of security in knowing that our drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs are equipped to deliver the evidence-based care needed to recover from substance use disorders. Banyan Treatment Center prides itself on delivering quality, proven addiction care based on research, data, and outcome-based measures. The multiple ASAM dimensions create a strength-based assessment that takes the patient's needs, obstacles, liabilities, strengths, assets, resources, and support structure into consideration when treating their addiction. This information is used to determine the appropriate level of care across a spectrum of inpatient to outpatient alcohol and drug addiction treatment.
When it comes to addiction treatment covered by insurance, the ASAM Level of Care Certification will help to differentiate between various levels of residential care that are often grouped as one. Subsequently, the ASAM assessment provides an independent evaluation of the services that treatment programs are fitted to provide. Insurance payors may use this information to reduce prior authorization requirements, structure reimbursement models, or create centers of excellence for substance abuse treatment. Above all, certification will provide a method for ensuring that patients enter rehab programs that are ready and able to deliver evidence-based care.
Our Banyan family is proud to hold this distinguished certification. It is our goal to provide excellent clinical care and to be able to give patients the peace of mind that they are in great, capable hands that have met high standards of licensure, accreditation, and certification in the substance abuse treatment industry.
