There is a stigma that surrounds alcoholism and substance abuse in general.
Much of society is unaware of the many struggles and problems that individuals with addictions face daily. Rather than understanding addiction is a chronic disease, many people view it as a selfish choice that can easily be remedied. April is National Alcohol Awareness Month and our drug and alcohol rehab in Massachusetts wants to focus on the importance of advocating for treatment and better understanding regarding alcoholism.

What Is Alcohol Awareness Month?
Alcohol Abuse Awareness Month is a public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way to spread awareness on the prevalence of alcoholism in the nation and spread education on the dangers of alcoholism. The program began in April 1987 and mainly targeted college-aged students. It has since expanded to offer education about alcoholism and help families and communities recover from the effects of alcohol addiction.
Why Is Alcohol Awareness Month Important?
The main focus of Alcohol Abuse Awareness Month is to bring the stigma surrounding alcoholism to light. Many individuals who suffer from substance abuse disorders struggle to admit their problems and reach out for help. They’re either ashamed of their condition or in denial about the harm their drinking is causing in their lives. Denial is also a common trait among the family and friends of people who have substance abuse disorders. Enabling and codependency are also common traits within families and relationships involving addiction. In response to these issues, Alcohol Awareness Month offers the public and society at large the chance to improve their efforts in combating alcoholism, break down the stereotypes surrounding alcoholism, and reach people who may not understand the dangers of alcohol abuse.
Many addiction treatment centers and organizations focused on combating addiction go to their social media or online platforms to spread the word about programs like Alcohol Awareness Month. In April 2021, these organizations will have the opportunity to share more information about alcohol abuse like the signs of alcoholism, side effects, and available treatment options.
At Banyan Treatment Centers Massachusetts, we offer a variety of addiction services including alcohol addiction treatment. Our alcohol rehab program is specifically designed to help individuals with drinking problems achieve long-lasting sobriety and gain the tools necessary to sustain it.
