When a patient suffers from both a panic and/or anxiety and addiction simultaneously, this is known as a dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis is when there is a mental illness and problematic addiction disorder at the same time. It is important that those suffering from a dual diagnosis receive the proper treatment that addresses both disorders together. Those who suffer from a panic attack or anxiety disorder are often under episodes of extreme stress.

The most common symptoms of panic and anxiety attacks are:

• Butterflies in stomach

• Hot flashes
• Dizziness
• Paranoia
• Rapid heart rate
• Trouble regulating breathing

In most dual diagnosis cases, we see the substance abuse stem from self medicating the mental health disorder. For many people who struggle with panic and anxiety disorders and substance abuse, quitting drugs or alcohol can actually make their mental illness worse.
