Between 1999 and 2016, Pasco County had the highest number of overdose-related deaths compared to other counties in the state. Pasco County – located near Polk County, Sumter County, Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, and Hernando County – has experienced nearly 1,641 overdose deaths. Drug abuse has also increased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reported 1,491 overdoses in 2020, which resulted in 268 deaths – a whopping 71% increase from 2019.³ Opioids are among the most commonly abused drugs in this county and are becoming a bigger problem for other areas in Florida.
