A Month To Remember

Suicide Prevention Month

September was definitely a month to remember, especially for Veterans in recovery.

From recognizing suicide awareness to remembering 9/11 to observing national recovery month, it’s understandable why September was tough for most veterans.

National Suicide Prevention Month brings awareness and conversation to the subject of suicide and ways to prevent it. The topic of suicide is very disheartening to many, but a common reality when it comes to the veteran population. Statistics show that approximately 22 veterans a day commit suicide. If you aren’t a veteran and don’t have any family members who were deployed, then you may wonder, why do veterans commit suicide? Some common reasons can include depression, substance abuse, and mental illness, especially post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The numerical symbol, 22, is frightening in the veteran community. Movements across the country have originated in efforts to bring awareness to this lethal social issue, which affects all of our communities. Suicide is preventable, and knowing the signs can be beneficial in preventing a loved one from following through.

Banyan Treatment Center has taken a resilient position in the recovery industry to offer veterans mental health treatment in determination to decrease the suicide rates among veterans. Banyan’s Veterans in Recovery program treats both substance use disorders and mental health disorders with facilities across the nation

September is also a month to remember because of 9/11/, an unforgettable date that represents the tragic attack on U.S. grounds in 2001. Numerous lives were taken and the families of these individuals were forever changed. 9/11 marks a date of terror, specifically for those who have served in the U.S. Military. This day brings back difficult memories, which can contribute to PTSD, depression, or excessive use of drugs or alcohol. In light of the current crisis in Afghanistan, many veterans continue to struggle mentally. Without substance use or mental health treatment, overcoming mental illness as a veteran can feel impossible. And that’s where Banyan comes in. If you know someone struggling with a substance use disorder or mental health disorder, get them help immediately.

Although September may have represented times of grief, it also signified a time to observe National Recovery Month. Recovery can include those celebrating years of sobriety or even those choosing to start their journey. Recovery from addiction or mental illness may seem scary in the beginning, but it is possible and anyone going through the process should take it one day at a time. The alumni program at Banyan Treatment Centers offers loads of support to our previous patients going through their journey, counting our veterans in recovery. We offer guidance to ensure success through their road through recovery and limit relapses. Community is needed during times or months similar to these, don’t let another month go by without joining a supportive community for yourself.
