Happy Sober Mother’s Day!

Happy Sober Mother’s Day!

For families that have been impacted by addiction, being able to enjoy a happy sober Mother’s Day is extremely special.

Regardless of your background or situation in life, no one is immune to addiction. Even the toughest and most dedicated mothers have fallen victim to drug or alcohol abuse for a variety of reasons. If you’re a mother who’s in addiction recovery or you have a mother who has undergone addiction treatment, then you’re not alone. Not only does our drug and alcohol treatment center in Boca understand how harmful addiction can be to a family dynamic, but we also offer resources to help both parents with addictions and their children. In honor of Mother’s Day 2021, Banyan Boca is sharing some ways children and their mothers can have a sober Mother’s Day together.

How to Have a Happy Sober Mother’s Day Together

Being sober on Mother’s Day is an incredible milestone. As a mother, this is a time where you can look back at how your relationship with your family has improved since receiving drug or alcohol addiction treatment. You’re also celebrating a particular strength that is special to mothers. Mothers are often focused on their kids and tend to forget themselves in the process. Now that you’ve made the decision to improve your health and get sober for yourself and your family, this day becomes an even more significant point of celebration.

Below are a few great ways to celebrate Mother’s Day sober with the family.

Take Photos

While this one may seem obvious, a great way to have a sober Mother’s Day and keep those memories with you is to not only take pictures but also have an album dedicated to Mother’s Day pictures or general holiday photos. This is a great way to journal the other holidays and memories that you as a sober mom or a child of a sober mom create together.

Write a Letter

Despite the various treatments and therapies that people receive or undergo during rehab, they may still struggle to find the right words to explain their addiction to their children. As a child of a mother in addiction recovery, substance abuse may have been difficult to understand. As a mother in addiction recovery, you may struggle to explain the physical and emotional effects of drug addiction to your children. That’s why celebrating Mother’s Day sober and together is so special. Writing a letter to each other is a healthy and personal way to express thoughts and feelings that may be too difficult to share in a conversation. Moms and their kids can also look back at these letters in the future and even read them every year to see how they’ve grown.

Get Crafty with Mother’s Day Cards

While Mother’s Day is a special day for mothers, they wouldn’t have gotten their title if not for their children. Especially for a sober mom, a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day in addiction recovery with your kids is by making cards for each other. Kids go through emotional turmoil when they witness their moms struggle with addiction. Creating a card for each other is a good way for both parties to express their love and appreciation for each other

Start a Special Mother’s Day Tradition

Whether it’s making pancakes every Mother’s Day morning or going out to your favorite restaurant for dinner, make a fun and long-lasting tradition. Traditions often bring people together and may continue even through any life changes. Start a special tradition that you can share with your mom or with your kids every year as a reminder of the accomplishments that have been made and the joy that has come from that one decision to get sober.
