Staying Sober After the Coronavirus

Staying Sober After the Coronavirus

With people self-quarantining and stay-at-home orders in place for over a month, many government officials are discussing reopening the nation and many Americans are getting antsy to finally go out in public again.

When the Chinese government ended the coronavirus lockdown, its citizens flocked to popular tourist sites in alarmingly high numbers. One such attraction, the Huangshan mountain park had thousands of people all crammed together. It is clear that after the lockdown, many people were eager to start getting their lives back to normal. As the United States looks to follow suit and people are once again able to leave their houses freely, many people are ready to start experiencing life again. For some, this may mean going out, partying with friends, or perhaps even going a little wild. For the recovering alcoholic or drug addict, staying sober after COVID-19 could prove challenging.

How to Stay Sober After COVID-19

Sobriety is a long journey, and some days are easier than others. With people ready to get out of the house, socialize, and party, you may be feeling a bit overwhelmed and afraid that your sobriety is at risk. Our Pompano drug rehab is sharing some tips for staying sober after the coronavirus so that the end of the pandemic doesn’t cost you all of your hard work.

Avoid Social Media

Especially if your friends start to go out to the party scene more after social distancing is over, you may be feeling left out. Avoid letting FOMO, or the fear of missing out, lead you to relapse. Instead, it may be a good idea to avoid social media for a while as people begin posting like crazy now that they are finally able to once again leave the house.

Connect with Friends from Recovery

While your regular friends may be going out more, your sober friends from your IOP or other treatment program are likely in the same position as you are and are also worried about their sobriety. Reconnect with them and together find some fun sober activities to do. It is important that you don’t feel like you are ever alone and having friends who are in the same situation as you can help.

Be Active in Recovery

The transition into quarantine itself may have been challenging, but transitioning back to your everyday life may also be difficult. In a time of many transitions, you may be feeling overwhelmed and start experiencing stronger addiction cravings. While you may be eager to get out there and have fun, you shouldn’t neglect your sobriety. Now is the time to be active in your recovery. Make time to attend recovery meetings regularly, reconnect with your support systems, and go the extra step to ensure that you are still choosing sobriety after the coronavirus.

Plan Sober Activities

Staying sober after the coronavirus can be difficult as you watch your friends go out to party. If you are going stir crazy at home and are more than ready to get out of the house, you are not alone. Instead of letting this energy get the best of your sobriety, there are plenty of ways to blow off some steam and still avoid relapse after the coronavirus. Start planning some fun sober activities such as hiking, going to a museum, lunch, golfing, or going to the spa. These activities will give you something to look forward to without feeling triggered to do drugs or drink alcohol.

Take A Step Back

Just because you are able to get out in public again, doesn’t mean you need to start planning jam-packed days. Take it slow. Especially if you are in early recovery, you want to slowly transition back to your everyday life. It is okay to stay home a little longer or to step away when you are feeling overwhelmed.

Even with these tips, staying sober after COVID-19 may prove to be too challenging. If you do relapse, it is okay. For many people, relapse is a part of the recovery process and a learning opportunity. Get help immediately before this slip-up snowballs back into addiction. Our relapse recovery program in Pompano helps people find their way back after relapse.
