Many people across the country have been calling for the federal legalization of weed, but for now, states are taking matters into their own hands.
The Path to Legalized Weed in Massachusetts
Marijuana first became legal in the state of Massachusetts in December of 2016 after a ballot question regarding recreational marijuana use was being voted on. Ultimately, the vote passed with 1.8 million people voting for recreational marijuana use and 1.5 million voting against it.1 Massachusetts was one of the first states to pass laws allowing recreational marijuana use, but there are stipulations. Initially, selling pot and recreational pot shops were banned until regulations could be set. Only more recently have these shops begun to open across Massachusetts, including the first recreational marijuana shop in Boston in March of this year.1The First Recreational Cannabis Dispensary in Boston
In the beginning of March, Boston’s first recreational marijuana shop opened in the city’s Dorchester neighborhood. Co-owners Kobie Evans and Kevin Hart obtained a license through the Cannabis Control Commission’s economic empowerment program. Some employees also have criminal backgrounds but are being given a second chance with this job. The shop called Pure Oasis sells everything from edibles to vape pens.Unfortunately for them, Boston’s first recreational marijuana shop is temporarily closed because of the coronavirus outbreak. There are plans to hopefully reopen the shop once the coronavirus issues subside.
While many are rejoicing at the first recreational cannabis dispensary in Boston, there are concerns. Some people worry that shops like these can lead people to a marijuana addiction. While marijuana is not addictive in the same way that cocaine or meth is, some people can develop a psychological dependence to this drug. With continued use, this addiction could interfere with a person’s regular life. Also, because weed is often not thought of as being addictive, people are less likely to get help like with a PHP or other professional treatment program if they do find themselves addicted.
Other research suggests that marijuana is a gateway drug for some people. It may make some users more willing to try harder drugs. When users graduate from marijuana to cocaine or another drug, a dependence may develop and treatment like an inpatient or outpatient program often becomes necessary for the person to stop.
