21-year-old YouTube star, Tana Mongeau got candid about her addiction to Xanax and mental health problems on a YouTube video she posted titled, “Letting You in on the Truth About MTV, Depression, + a Life Update”. In the video, she says that “2019 might have been one of the most successful textbook years of my life, but when it comes to my mental state, it was absolutely, hands down, in my 21 years of life, the worst year of that”. She says she “crumbled to be real” and because of that, it got to a point where she hit rock bottom and wanted to die. She suffered emotional abuse for 15 years and hated her parents. Tana Mongeau struggled with depression because she attempted to bottle up all of that pain. In July of 2019, Tana got married to fellow Youtuber, Jake Paul, but they split up in January.
All of these events in her life took a huge toll. It got to the point that Tana Mongeau started to abuse Xanax to cope. Tana’s Xanax addiction got so bad that she finally confessed to her manager. She credits her managers for saving her life.
Along with her addiction, it sounds like Tana Mongeau had a co-occurring disorder. This occurs when a mental health disorder exists with a substance use disorder. In order to help the person move past all of their issues, dual diagnosis treatment is a necessary step.
We are so proud of Tana for being so open about her struggles with substance abuse and mental health and that she took responsibility for her actions. It is not an easy thing to open up about but talking about her own struggles can help others who may be also be struggling.
