Preparing for a Sober St. Patrick’s Day

Preparing for a Sober St. Patrick’s Day

What originally started as a feast to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland has grown into a huge celebration that often centers around consuming copious amounts of alcohol.

For a newly sober person who has overcome addiction or alcoholism, celebrating this holiday can be a dangerous game full of triggers for relapse everywhere. If you are celebrating the holiday, you can do so with sobriety in mind. Here are tips for staying sober on St. Patrick’s Day from our Stuart Florida detox center.

Sober St. Patrick’s Day Tips

Our alcoholism and addiction detox center shares some guidelines on how to avoid drinking on St. Patrick’s Day. With the right planning, you can avoid drinking on this, and any other, holiday. For an alcohol-free St. Patrick’s Day, consider these tips:

  • Stick with sober people. By celebrating with other sober individuals, you won’t feel the pressure to drink. There are alumni recovery groups along with support programs in your local community that can encourage a sober holiday.
  • Bring alcohol-free drinks. There are many non-alcoholic party drinks that you can enjoy while still feeling like part of the festivities. If you’re unsure whether or not there will be non-alcoholic party drinks at the event you’re attending, bring some of your own.
  • Prepare an exit strategy. If celebrating St. Patrick’s Day without drinking becomes too overwhelming, be sure to have a reason to leave ready. Maybe you have to wake up early the next day, or perhaps your parking is about to expire so you need to leave. Have an excuse ready to go so you can exit the party stress-free.
  • Be a designated driver. This is one of the best ways to have an alcohol-free St. Patrick’s Day. When you’re the designated driver and others are counting on you to get home safely, you’ll feel the importance of staying sober on St. Patrick’s Day. As the DD, one drink can spell disaster for you and those who are counting on you, and this pressure will encourage you to stay on the right path.
