Off to Rehab: What Not to Pack

Off to Rehab: What Not to Pack

Heading off to a residential treatment program in a drug rehab facility can be daunting and scary at first.  It’s tough to know what to expect and thus how to prepare.

During the recovery process, which varies by facility, you will receive a room along with the bedding and furniture needed for your stay. As part of your treatment, you will receive counseling, therapeutic sessions, and medications that will assist in the recovery process. While this might seem like a confusing and difficult process, it’s for your own health and the betterment of your life.  So let’s not fret too much, and instead focus on how to prepare for your stay.

Items That Should NOT Be Brought With You to Rehab

In addition to the usual contraband that is illegal to bring anywhere such as drugs or other substances, there are also other items that are blacklisted. Electronics of any kind are generally discouraged or forbidden. Computers, cell phones, and tablets are required to stay behind in order to receive the full treatment experience. Your treatment facility will have telephones and televisions that you can use when necessary but the main focus is for you to take this time to work on your spirituality, your health, and to unplug from the world around you.

Weapons are obviously prohibited, this should go without saying, including your trusty pocket knife, razors for shaving and any other dangerous objects. Anything that is sharp, or could be used as a weapon, will be confiscated during your stay. Some treatment centers will go so far as to prohibit clothing with string as this may influence self harm. Be prepared to turn in that mouthwash, only non-alcoholic and non-narcotic items will be allowed.

Any valuables that you do not want to leave out in the open should be left behind, as safety is not always guaranteed. Jewelry  that you do not need to wear or other items that cost a lot of money are better left at home. Excessive amounts of cash and credit cards are not required.

Pack only comfortable clothing that covers your entire body, and does not have offensive pictures or sayings visible. If you’re half covered or have something on your shirt, this can cause a distraction for you and everyone else receiving treatment. Having the proper clothing is also essential to maintaining your comfort while in residence.

You’re going to rehab to better yourself.

Bringing your personal care items, and even make-up for those that wear it, is allowed but not necessary.
